36% of First Nations people have a disability compared to the national average of 21%.

And 36% of First Nations peoples with disability complete year 12 compared to 59% of non Indigenous people with disability.

Fair Australia believes that a National Disability Plan under a Disability Minister should take responsibility for lessening the education gaps between First Nations and non Indigenous peoples with disability.

A National Disability plan under a National Disability Minister would cover effective ways to lessen this gap and make sure every Australian with disability has better outcomes.

Despite 1 in 2 people over the age of 65 having a disability, currently, people who acquire disabilities over the age of 65 cannot receive NDIS coverage.

That’s millions of older Australians at risk of acquiring a disability and being left without NDIS support.

We need a National Disability Plan under a National Disability Minister to ensure all people with disability are able to get the support and coverage they need.

58% of people with disability complete year 12 compared to 76% of people without disability.

The Disability Royal Commission found that “Mainstream schools need major reforms to overcome the barriers that prevent students with disability, particularly students with intellectual disability, accessing safe, equal and inclusive education”

A Disability Minister would help to bridge these gaps and ensure every school student gets the best possible education they can.

Only 56% of people with disability of working age are employed, compared to 82% for those without disability.

Fair Australia believes that this number should be and can be much higher.

The Disability Royal Commission found that people with disability face systemic barriers to obtaining and retaining open employment. It found that governments across Australia should take steps to increase the rate of employment of people with disability in the public sector.

With a disability employment target of 15% for government departments, agencies, and supply chains people with disability with have a significantly higher chance of obtaining and retaining employment

76% of employers say that finding qualified people with disability was a challenge in employing people with disability.

The education outcomes for people with disability, insufficient training, pathways, and onboarding is currently a barrier to employment.

A National Disability Plan under a National Disability Minister would address the multi-factor barriers to employment that often transgress govt departments.
