An episode of Gardening Australia features a story with Deakin Uni researcher Dr Prue Francis (also one of our regular research partners) discussing the reef restoration projects Parks Victoria have been working on in Northern Port Phillip Bay, and the kelp biobank. The story starts at around 8.20 minutes with a focus on the methods Prue developed to grow kelp in the lab which was then planted in Jawbone and Ricketts Point as part of the restoration projects.

Nudibranchs are abundant in the Sanctuary at present. There are quite a large number to be seen, and quite a few different species to be found. This is the best I've seen at Ricketts in many decades of exploring the area. It also happens to coincide with the Victorian autumn nudibranch census.

Here are some of the nudis seen over the last two days.

Link to information about the census in the comments. It will explain how to upload photos to iNaturalist to be included in the census.

Dear Marine Carers,

Due to the long weekend and a number of volunteer and participant absences (enjoying the opportunity to get away for the Easter Holiday break), we have had to make the hard decision to cancel this Saturday's beach patrol (4 April 2026).

Wherever you are this long weekend we encourage you to go for a walk, take a bag and collect some of the items littering our beaches, parks and streets.

We hope to see you all again on Saturday 2 May.

Kind regards

Alison and JZ

With the recent heavy rain and strong winds it is predictable that visibility may not be great. With that in mind I decided to set up my camera for closeups, where visibility is less of an issue image quality wise.

Over the last few weeks nudibranchs have been quite active in the sanctuary. Today I saw around 12 individuals and 4 different species in total. Unfortunately I didn't find any of the less common species that I have been seeing lately.

Fish life was reasonably good today (particularly snapper), but with the poor visibility they weren't as readily seen.

These shots were taken on Fossil Ledge (in the Yacht Club to Teahouse area)
