Teach For Australia

Teach For Australia Working for an Australia where education gives every child greater choice for their future.

We believe in equity in education – an Australia where your postcode does not determine your future potential, the opportunities available to you in life, or your ability to contribute to society. That's why our vision is of an Australia where education gives every child, regardless of background, greater choice for their future.

‘Once I started teaching Noongar language, it was the only thing I wanted to teach.’

What’s the connection between teaching, leadership and making a real, tangible difference that challenges the status quo?

The answer lies in stories like Dylan's.

A Wadjak Balardong Noongar man, and a member of our 2017 cohort, Dylan Collard understands the ways Australia’s education system has historically excluded and harmed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Today, Dylan is reclaiming education as a critical tool to celebrate, strengthen and revitalise Noongar culture and language.

Through his business, Kalyakoorl – meaning ‘forever’ in Noongar – Dylan embodies a powerful approach to leadership: being brave enough to have a go, even when you might fail.

This , as educators and allies, let’s carry Dylan’s perspective into our own reconciliation journeys. Even when we’re worried about getting it wrong, we can still choose to show up, listen and learn.

"Those first few weeks or months were exhilarating." 💥💥

LDP alum Eliza Kramer recently shared her reflections of doing the program during one of our Q+A webinars - including how she felt standing in front of a classroom for the first time.

“You can’t win teaching,” she said. “It’s really important to have balance and something that fills your cup.”

Throughout the webinar, Alumni discussed:

- what the first months in the classroom are really like
- balancing university study with teaching responsibilities
- mentorship and support throughout the program
- working in regional and low-SES school communities
- how to prepare before entering the classroom
- what kinds of people thrive in the program

One message came through consistently: no one feels fully prepared at the beginning -- but support, adaptability and connection matter.

“The most useful piece of advice I pulled out of the [Leadership Development Program] was the importance of building relationships with students."

"If a teacher doesn’t have a relationship with their students, they might as well be teaching the walls.” 🤝

Before joining our 2020 Cohort, Mike Muscat worked in marketing and ran his own hospitality business. Pictured here with some of his students, he now helps young people to thrive as an Assistant Principal at Robinvale College in northwest Victoria.

“Having life experience allows you to connect much of what you’re teaching to real-world examples," he says.

"One of the most common questions a teacher hears is: ‘How is this subject, essay or lesson relevant to me?’ Having that lived experience enables you to answer that question with applied knowledge."

"Life experience also equips you with the skills to work with a range of personalities and backgrounds, which is an essential skill in a modern-day classroom full of students with vastly different learning abilities and needs.”

If you read one article this weekend, make it this one ☕📰

Our Undergraduate Teaching Program particpant, Adeeb Nawim, wrote this incredible piece in last week's The Saturday Paper, detailing his experience rebuilding his life as an educator in Australia after having to flee from his home, Afghanistan.

It's a truly inspiring story of hope and strength in the face of profound upheaval - and also the story of how teachers change young people's lives by bringing their whole selves and lived experiences into the classroom.

Congratulations Adeeb on this fantastic article and for pursuing your teaching dream through the UTP ✨
