This National Reconciliation Week, Vision 2020 and Guide Dogs Victoria brought members together for a powerful conversation on what it means to be All In for Reconciliation.

Led by Anne-Marie Banfield and Abe Ropitini, the discussion challenged us to think beyond symbolic gestures and consider what genuine allyship looks like in practice.

One message was particularly strong, that reconciliation is not a spectator sport. It asks all of us to reflect, learn, speak up, and take practical action every day.

Our gratitude to Anne-Marie and Abe for being so generous in sharing your personal insights on ways that organisations can make a move from good intentions to meaningful action.

Today is World Alström Syndrome Day.

Alström syndrome is an ultra-rare, life-limiting and degenerative condition affecting multiple organ systems, including vision.

Alström syndrome is estimated to affect approximately one in one million births worldwide. There is currently no cure, and research and access to treatment pathways continue to evolve.

Today is an opportunity to raise awareness, support progress in research, and recognise the families navigating rare and complex conditions.

If you would like to learn more or explore ways to support efforts to strengthen research and connection for families affected by Alström syndrome in Australia, visit Alstrom Syndrome Australia.

This week Vision 2020 was proud to participate in the Women Deliver 2026 Conference, joining the Australian College of Optometry to provide eye screenings to over 140 delegates. We thank our Gold Member, The Fred Hollows Foundation, for the invitation to be part of this powerful conference.

Women Deliver reinforced that eye health is not just a health issue but it is also fundamental to gender equality, economic participation and social inclusion. Women and girls disproportionately face barriers to accessing eye care and without action, preventable vision loss continues to deepen inequality, poverty and exclusion.

Vision 2020 celebrates the World Health Organization’s confirmation that Australia has officially eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, another significant step in the prevention of avoidable blindness.

Trachoma is the world’s leading infectious cause of preventable blindness and in Australia, it is found primarily in regional and remote First Nations communities, most commonly in children.

In Australia, trachoma prevalence in at-risk communities has fallen from 14.9% in 2009 to just 1.5% in 2024. This outcome has been made possible through many years of sustained community-led efforts from Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, local health workers, families, governments and many of our member organisations. We also recognise the dedicated work of Vision 2020 co-founder, Prof Hugh Taylor AC, to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem.

Vision 2020 Chair, Graham Perrett, and CEO, Carly Iles, attended yesterday's National Diabetes Summit at Parliament House, hosted by our member, Diabetes Australia.

The day combined leaders in health, research, policy and industry, as well as those living with diabetes, to discuss the state of diabetes in Australia, including topics such as equity of access, prevention, innovation and the realities of delivering care in diverse communities. This included an overview of enhancing diabetes-related vision care and preventing vision loss through the KeepSight program, a program Vision 2020 proudly helped establish as a founding partner.
