Press Release by
Shia Imams Council of Victoria Inc
The Shia Imams Council of Victoria a5irms its deep appreciation for the peaceful and dignified
participation of the Victorian Shia Muslim community in the annual Ashura Day procession held
in Melbourne’s CBD on 7 July 2025.
This religious event – commemorated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram –
marks the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS), the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet
Muhammad (SAW). Imam Husain’s stand for justice, human dignity, and freedom of
conscience continues to inspire millions around the world, across diverse faiths and cultures.
The peaceful procession, organised by the Ashura Committee of Victoria, is held every year in
full coordination with Victoria Police and relevant local authorities. All legal permissions and
route approvals are obtained in advance, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for
participants and the wider public. This year’s procession followed a route designated by law
enforcement, which included public roads passing by various landmarks in the city, including
St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Unfortunately, following this year’s procession, a small number of social media users
attempted to misrepresent the nature and intent of the event. We strongly reject these baseless
claims. As clarified by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Rev. Peter A. Comensoli, in his o5icial
statement, the procession was “peaceful and in accordance with proper permissions” and did
not present any cause for concern.
We are grateful for the Archbishop’s gracious words and leadership in a5irming the facts and
reinforcing the spirit of mutual respect that defines Melbourne’s vibrant, multicultural society.
The Ashura procession is a religious tradition observed by Shia Muslim communities in several
cities both across Australia and the rest of the world. It is an expression of devotion and
remembrance, marked by solemn reflection, poetry, and mourning. It is never directed against
any other faith group or institution.
The Shia Muslim community of Victoria remains committed to the values of peaceful
coexistence, interfaith harmony, and civic responsibility. We are proud contributors to
Australia’s diverse and inclusive social fabric, and we believe in the power of dialogue,
understanding, and respect to overcome division.
We invite all Australians to learn more about the legacy of Imam Husain (AS) – a legacy that
transcends religious boundaries and speaks to the universal pursuit of justice, truth, peace and
compassion.
Maulana Syed Abul Qasim Rizvi,
President - Shia Imams Council of Victoria Inc.
