Helem Melbourne

Helem Melbourne Helem is social support group which aims to improving and provide a safe space for GLBTIQ people from Arab communities in Melbourne.

Helem (حلم) is the Arabic word for dream, aspiration or patience.

“The dream” of GLBTIQ is the acceptance of the gay Arab communities within Australia and the Arab world, and that the Arabic speaking community grow to understand and love us for who we are. Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment which will contribute to the protection of Melbourne's GLBTIQ community, which incl

udes Arabic speaking individuals, against prejudices; in particular rejection, discrimination, threats and fears. Helem Melbourne was established in June 2012 as a non for profit organisation. Its aim is to provide a safe and secure forum for GLBTIQ persons from Arabic speaking background and their families and friends to meet, chat and discuss gay related issues within their communities. As the Helem community continues to grow, we aspire to help many more individuals to address relevant issues and aim to create a supportive community which celebrates our cultural background and diverse sexuality. So far, the group has more than thirty members who come from different parts of the Arabic speaking world. The committee organises gatherings, functions and special events to maintain connections. The group has become like a family, particularly, for members who are away from their homes for work or study. We can be contacted either by email or through our page in Facebook.
