AARES has been allocated one session at the Allied Association Organised Symposium at the AAEA Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. USA, 27 to 29 July 2025. In addition to our Heading North Award winner, there are two speaker slots in this session. Whilst AARES can’t provide any financial support, we do offer any interested AARES members who would like to submit an abstract and manuscript related to agricultural economics in Australasia a chance to speak in this session. An AARES Executive/Board sub-committee will then select speakers based on academic merit, clarity of expression, topical importance and policy relevance criteria.

Selection / Application Process
To apply to be a speaker in this session, please submit the following via email to [email protected]:
• a paper for presentation at the AAEA 2025 Annual Meeting in Denver, on the theme of “Agricultural and natural resource economics in Australasia”, for which the applicant is the sole or first author of an original and unpublished work
• a one-page biographical statement, and
• a statement indicating sufficient travel funds are available to attend the conference.

ACIAR was honoured to have CEO Professor Wendy Umberger deliver a keynote address at the 2025 Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society Conference in Brisbane last week.

Her presentation explored the challenges facing global food and agricultural systems and highlighted the need for a more interdisciplinary approach to agricultural development research. It was also an opportunity to showcase ’s work and impact. 🌏

Applications are invited for the 2025 Heading North award

The Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) and the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) through the AAEA Trust will jointly offer this travel award to young professional members of AARES or AAEA normally resident in Australia or New Zealand.

Applications should include:
✔️ a paper for presentation at the AAEA 2025 Annual Meeting in Denver, for which the applicant is the sole or first author and which represents their original and unpublished work,
✔️ a one-page biographical statement, and
✔️ a one-page statement in support of their application, indicating what they would hope to accomplish through the award, why they would be deserving of the award, and confirming that they would be unable to attend the conference without this financial support.

Our Board Member, Professor Kym Anderson AC FASSA, was very much at home at the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society chairing the Crawford Fund keynote by Michelle Wellington, Chief Strategy, Performance and Engagement Officer of the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on ‘Meeting the Challenges of Transition to a Sustainable Future’.

Congratulations to Professor Rene Villano, who has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES), one of only three recipients of this prestigious honour in 2024.

The award, presented at AARES’s 69th Annual Conference in Brisbane, recognises members who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and impact in their field. Distinguished Fellows are selected for their sustained contributions to research, teaching, and policy development in agricultural and resource economics.

Professor Villano’s recognition reflects his significant influence in shaping both academic discourse and practical applications within the field. The Distinguished Fellow Award further acknowledges his leadership in research and teaching programs relevant to AARES’s mission.

With this award, Professor Villano joins a select group of scholars who have helped advance our understanding of agricultural and resource economics in the Australasian region.
