Justice and dignity to a Timorese worker

Ambassador Inês Almeida received a phone call from Mateus, a Timorese worker whose workers' compensation case we have been supporting.

In 2024, while working on the kill floor of a meat processing company in Australia, he suffered a serious workplace accident and lost his little finger. He lodged a workers' compensation claim, but was not initially assessed for Permanent Physical Impairment (PPI). The case was closed.

Following the intervention of the Timor-Leste Embassy in 2025, through DEWR, the WorkSafe Qld, reopened and reassessed Mateus' case. As a result, he has now received the compensation he was entitled to under the law.

During the conversation, he expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador, Embassy staff, Joaquim Santos, the Labour Attaché and the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) for their support throughout the process.

Mateus said when he received the compensation payment, he cried.

When Ambassador asked him why, he said that for a long time he had worried that people might think he had deliberately caused the injury in order to receive compensation.

The Ambassador reassured him that workplace accidents happen. No worker chooses to lose a finger, a hand, or any part of their body. Workers' compensation exists to support people who suffer genuine injuries while carrying out their work.

The Ambassador also thanked him for trusting the Embassy to walk alongside him throughout this journey.

This outcome is about more than compensation.
It is about fairness, dignity and ensuring that Timorese workers receive the protections and entitlements available to them under the law.

Every worker deserves to know that when things go wrong, they do not have to face the challenge alone.
