Building an inclusive workplace starts with a simple decision: being open to talent from different backgrounds and experiences.

Many employers are looking for dedicated, skilled employees who will contribute to their team and grow with their organisation. At the same time, many deaf and hard of hearing jobseekers are looking for employers who value their skills and potential.

Creating opportunities isn't about lowering expectations. It's about widening the door to talented people who may otherwise be overlooked.

Sign for Work helps employers connect with job-ready candidates and provides guidance to support successful recruitment and workplace inclusion.

At Sign For Work, we believe meaningful employment can create life-changing opportunities and this story is a powerful reminder of that.
One of our newest Queensland customers has recently secured a part-time role she absolutely loves, working in a bakery team preparing and baking biscuits for a major supermarket chain.

Her journey to employment has been anything but easy. Growing up Deaf in a rural area overseas, she had limited access to formal education, language and technology. Despite these barriers, she showed remarkable determination by teaching herself American Sign Language (ASL) online whenever she could access the internet.

After migrating to Australia and settling on the Gold Coast, she spent eight years without access to support services. Once connected with the NDIS, she set clear goals for her future: learning Auslan and English, finding meaningful employment and building financial security for her family.

Through the support of her coordinator, she was introduced to Lynda at Sign For Work. As a qualified Auslan interpreter fluent in both Auslan and ASL, Lynda was uniquely placed to support her journey toward employment and independence.

Today, she is thriving in her role and continuing to build confidence, skills and communication every day. Her future goals include becoming fully fluent in Auslan, increasing her work hours, getting her driver’s licence and car, and one day travelling home with her daughter to reconnect with family.

Her story is a powerful example of what can happen when determination is matched with the right support.

At Sign For Work, we are proud to support deaf and hard of hearing individuals to achieve their employment goals and create pathways to greater independence and inclusion.

Diversity brings people together. Inclusion makes sure everyone belongs.
In today’s workplaces, having a mix of people isn’t enough - what matters is whether every team member feels valued, supported, and able to contribute.

For deaf and hard of hearing employees, true inclusion means accessible communication, equal opportunities, and a workplace that listens and adapts.
When businesses invest in inclusion, they don’t just support individuals - they build stronger teams, improve performance, and create a culture where everyone can thrive. Research continues to show that inclusive workplaces lead to better wellbeing, higher engagement, and stronger outcomes for organisations.

Sign for Work partners with employers to turn inclusion into action - from recruitment to workplace support - helping create environments where everyone has the chance to succeed.

What makes a workplace truly inclusive? It starts with communication, but it doesn’t stop there.

A deaf friendly workplace is one where communication is clear, meetings are accessible, and employees feel confident asking for what they need. Simple changes - like using captions, sharing meeting notes, or learning basic Auslan - can make a big difference in how included someone feels day to day.

It’s also about culture. When employers listen, adapt, and regularly check in with their team, they create an environment where deaf and hard of hearing employees can contribute fully and thrive.

Inclusion isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about doing the small things consistently - and doing them well.
