Today is World Mental Health Day - What did you do?

With all the local council elections going on, right now is really important for us all to take check of our mental health.

Today, I took time out of my day to go for a decent bike ride with my son, enjoying some fresh air and lovely sunshine, to help reset and recharge.

It's not just the candidates who need to take check of their mental health during this election time, anyone can get a little wound up with the election process and various campaigns.

My advice would be to take a step back, take a deep breath and reconsider what you say, post or write.

When communicating with others, three questions you may like to consider before hitting the 'send button' are:

1) Is your parent (or grandparent) comfortable reading what you have written/posted?

2) Is your language respectful and considerate of others?

3) Are you considering other viewpoints and opinions?

This will help reduce stress for everyone and help gain credibility in what you say / are trying to communicate to others.

Hi everyone,

As the four other Altona Ward Candidates have now publically provided their support for Techno Park, it appears I am the only candidate able if elected, to Vote at Council meetings on this really important community matter - the future welfare and housing of Techno Park residents.

Whilst this matter is in a neighbouring Ward, see the attached for my comments and my impartiality on this topic, in order to remain able to advocate for all of our residents, ratepayers and businesses across the entire Hobson Bay area.

Butt it out - I am serious!
Many will be aware that I am running for the local council election in Hobsons Bay.
Today I had a brilliant conversation with an unemployed gentleman in our community, he was made redundant from a large manufacturing company nearby and has lived in the area his whole life.
We had a great conversation about all sorts of topics ranging from:
- local birds, including the Rainbow Lorikeet and New Holland Honey Eater,
- the development of Seaholme and Altona housing over the years, and
- we talked about the various reserves along the coastline that were preserved by Council back in the 1980's, from future residential / commercial development.
He then proceeded to showed me a little contraption that had been provided to by Hobsons Bay City Council around c2000.
It is a little container used to store cigarette butts and the ash for smokers.
Firstly I was amazed that he is still using this c24 years later. As you can see from the condition in the photo, it has been extremely well used, on a regular basis.
Secondly, he advised that it had broken a couple of times and had been able to fix the lid so it still worked, the tenacity of this gentleman.
What a great idea keeping butts off our streets, out of our waterways and ensuring our natural environment is kept as pristine as possible.
I pledge to this gentleman that if elected I will do my best to get more butt containers supplied by Council, he deserves an upgrade after 25 years of use!

Change your habits!
Looking at this picture you can be forgiven for thinking I may have a drinking problem - this could not be further from the truth! I encourage you to read on.
Since November my two children and I have been collecting cans, bottles and recyclables around Altona, Seaholme and the wider Hobsons Bay.
By doing so, my children have raised $1,746.10, making me feel very proud!
As their Dad, I have set each of them up with a bank account earning 5%p.a. interest. I also contribute an equal amount, so that they both have had $1,746.10 paid in their banks accounts.
I know this will set them up for something good when they finish secondary school, perhaps a car, or the ability to buy some furniture when they live independently.
So... for the local community, that's 17,461 cans, bottles and recyclables my family has diverted from our streets, waterways and parks around Altona, Seaholme and Hobsons Bay.
This is my innovative way of thinking, for us to help clean up our local environment and teach my children the value of money!
Hopefully, this post educates you as the reader, not to judge people on your first perception, but rather to do a little research (like those who have now read this post) and be more understanding of others.
