I will forever love being in the same room as other young legends who care about the environment 🌱🫶🏻

A little bit ago I was honoured to give the opening rev up talk to a room full of 150 young leaders of TODAY (love that Kumi Naidoo quote) at the 2025 Melbourne Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) 🧒

This was as part of the global LCOY process under the .unfccc . It is one of the ways youth voices feed into the Global Youth Statement ahead of in Brazil this November.🇧🇷

Thanks to UN Youth Australia and Australia and delivery through Australia Leaders2050 and the Melbourne Corporate Citizenship Committee.

I’ve had the best day ever today learning from one of the relatives of William Barak! .art

Ky-ya is the Daughter of Mandy Nicholson, and Niece of Bill Nicholson who have helped revive Woo-Wurung language in Narrm (also the reason you call Melbourne Narrm)

Kyya was a wealth of knowledge and I can’t wait to depict her deep connection to the 6 levels of country and its seasons and animals through a documentary on climate change and its impacts on Melbourne

🐋 Humpback whale populations in Eastern Aus have returned to pre-commercial whaling era, while the Worlds largest marine protected will be created in the pacific

👩‍⚖️The UN’s top court has declared that all countries have a legal duty to combat climate change

🪃In July 2025, the Murujuga Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage List.

🐝 Stingless bees are now legally recognised in Peru, having the right to exist and to a healthy environment

🌱Australia recently established three major new national parks in Victoria, and more Indigenous protected areas like the whole Tiwi Islands, while the Republic of Congo will see a new forest reserve the size of France.

☀️Renewables have finally overtaken coals in energy production in Australia and Around the world.

🖤💛❤️Victoria was the first state to sign a treaty with First Nations People, which led to a formal, historic apology to First Peoples for centuries of injustice

🇳🇿NEW ZEALAND now include all animals in their national POPULATION which has risen to 695 BILLION

🇧🇷There is 10 new indigenous territories in Brazil, whilst deforestation so a record 30% drop from 2024

😳🤯Peru bug diversity is UNREAL!🦋🐝🪲🐜🪰💯

Peru is one of the 17 MEGADIVERSE countries in the world. 🌎✅

#1 butterfly diversity in the world!

And it’s not just the diversity, there’s so much unique and intriguing species that you just wouldnt find anywhere else.

For instance some of my fav insects from Peru are:
🐜Army ants
🐜Bullet Ants
🦗 Katydids!
🦋Clearwing butterflies
🪲Macromantis
🕷️Wandering Spider

From the floodplains of the Amazon to the butterfly heavens in the Cloud forests to the alpine grasslands of the Andes, there are SO MANY insects in Peru!!

😱My First Parliamentary Roundtable😬🙌🏻

🐈🐸Invasive Species🐷🦌 being the point of discussion

Some of my takeaways :
🇦🇺 Australia is already a technological advanced country so we need to focus on coordinating and collaborating our management instead of competing, with a galvanising example being Predator Free 2050 NZ.

💡 Innovation comes from ideas, ideas come from knowledge- We have researchers that have spent years or decades looking at invasive species impacts, while we have traditional owners that have spent generations

🖤💛❤️ Traditional owner stake holder engagement needs to be a prerequisite to any sort of funding and a dissemination of findings needs to be a requirement.

📢 We need to communicate findings and disseminate updates with philanthropists and First Nations groups instead of publishing reports and research and forgetting about it

We need longer funding cycles for management 💯

🤖 Cool innovation and Technology:
AI for physical innovations like trapping for feral cats 🐈‍⬛

🐸 PeterPan Cane toads = Tadpoles that never grow up and cannibalise cane toad eggs and never morph

⭐️pheromone traps that attract starfish

The HOLY GRAIL of BITTERFLIES are you KIDDING ME!!! (.wild reaction was absolutely valid🤣)

Agrias claudina is one of the MOST SPECTACULAR butterflies in the world 🦋✨

Often Found deep in the TROPICAL RAINFORESTS of the Amazon 🇵🇪 with this specimen being spotted at .biostation in Cusco, Peru🌴

It explodes into view with ELECTRIC BLUE, FIERY RED, and VELVET BLACK wings.

In a heartbeat, it folds its wings and VANISHES into perfect DEAD-LEAF CAMOUFLAGE 🍂🔍.

Its RARITY, breathtaking beauty, and the thrill of catching that split-second flash of colour make it a HOLY GRAIL for photographers and butterfly lovers worldwide 📸🌎💎.

‼️We MUST Protect these BEAUTIFUL Nature Areas ASAP⏰💯

The forests of the central west are refuges for wildlife and people 🦜🦋🪲🌱

An incredible variety of life call them home – including over 380 rare and threatened plants and animals. 🦅🦉🪰🐛🐍🐿️

After decades of community pressure, in June 2021 the Victorian Government committed to three new national parks,

1. Wombat-Lerderderg National Park, (near Daylesford),

2. MountBuangor National Park (near Beaufort) and

3. the Pyrenees National Park (near Avoca).

But the parks STILL haven’t been legislated. 🤦‍♂️

Let’s call on the government asap!!!
