ANZAC COMMEMORATIONS 2026
Adelaide Anzac March

After the march, State President Paul Rosenzweig and Vice-President Don Cameron, with Borneo veteran Jeff Hiscock, presented special Certificates of Appreciation to Ben Ortmann (and Elliot Ortmann) and Matt Kuta. These certificates acknowledged 25 years’ service supporting the SA/NT Branch as Banner Bearers in the annual Adelaide Anzac March, since at least 2001 when the Branch first marched behind its new association banner. Ben and Elliot are grandsons of founding President former Corporal David Ross Ortmann (1935-2002), from 1995 until his death in Adelaide on 19 May 2002, aged 66.

Born in Mitcham on 1 June 1935, Ross completed National Service training in 1954 with 16 National Service Training Battalion at Woodside Barracks. He served in South Korea after the Armistice as a Rifleman with 1RAR in 1955-56, and then during the Malayan Emergency with 2RAR in 1956-58, assigned to the 28th Commonwealth Independent Infantry Brigade Group at Minden Barracks on Penang Island.

KOTA KINABALU: The annual Anzac Day wreath-laying commemoration ceremony in Kota Kinabalu was held at the Anzac Memorial, formerly called North Borneo World War 1 Memorial, in Jalan Tugu, opposite Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Friday morning.

The solemn event honours Australian, New Zealand, British soldiers along with fallen locals who fought, in this case, against the Japanese Occupation, to protect the sovereignty of Sabah.

ANZAC COMMEMORATIONS 2026
Adelaide Anzac March

On Anzac Day, the South Australian Malaya & Borneo Veterans once more marched in Adelaide to honour those who served and lost their lives on active service during the undeclared Malayan wars which immediately followed World War 2. This year the NMBVAA observes the 60th anniversary of the end of Confrontation. State President Major Paul Rosenzweig OAM (ret’d) carried the Sarawak state flag to honour the eleven Australian Sarawak Defenders who lost their lives during Confrontation, and to honour the service and sacrifice of the Iban Trackers and all Sarawakians in defence of their homeland.
