Seven years ago, the team at 13.12 Artistic Director Lamine Sonkoand Producer Olive Moynihan, began an ongoing exploration into an ancient African cosmovision—one that understands existence as sacred, cyclical, and deeply interconnected. This philosophy is carried forward by the Guewels: cultural custodians and mediators who connect the cosmic, spiritual, and natural worlds. Through song, rhythm, and ritual, the Guewel gathers community to share knowledge and renew collective spirit. In collaboration with the National Theatre of Senegal, this theatre piece was born. Melbourne audiences are able to witness this work first hand, as the African artists step foot in Australia for the first time in over 45 years. As an Associate Producer, it is a deep honour and privilege to work on a project that has such depth, meaning and alignment. This is not to be missed. Season runs from Wednesday 12 - Sunday 16 November. Proudly supported by Creative Australia Creative Victoria Arts House City of Melbourne

Guewel is a ritual journey through an ancient African cosmovision, exploring landscapes of the soul and preparing us for life’s beginnings and endings.

I wonder if he’s paid in ‘exposure’ 😂

Inside a darkened gallery in Perth, Australia, visitors gather around a glowing platform, staring at what looks like a pair of tiny jellyfish under a microscope. But these aren’t sea creatures, they’re lab-grown brain cells, cultivated from the late experimental music legend Alvin Lucier. And they’re composing music. LIVE!

Welcome to Revivification; a mind-bending fusion of neuroscience and art created by a team of artists and scientists who have spent decades exploring the frontiers of biological creativity. With help from Lucier himself, they took his white blood cells, reprogrammed them into stem cells, and grew mini-brains.

Those brains now sit atop 64 electrodes, pulsing with activity that gets translated into eerie, evolving sounds broadcast from 20 shimmering brass dishes around the room.

But here’s the twist: Lucier’s brain isn’t just creating music... it’s listening too! Microphones in the space capture ambient sounds, feed them back into the organoid, and the system responds. The team hopes the brain might even learn over time. =Lucier may have passed, but thanks to science and sound, his music plays on.
