Three things we took away from our conversation with Jana Stewart.

Start talking about money early. Make conversations about earning, saving, investing and giving a normal part of growing up.

Normalise conversations about money. The more openly we talk about financial wellbeing, the more knowledge we can share with our families and communities.

Think about what you’re passing on. The financial knowledge and confidence we build today can create opportunities and security for the generations coming next.

Jana reminds us that building wealth is about more than money. It’s about creating knowledge and opportunities that can be shared and carried forward.

What an amazing week connecting with the communities of Bidyadanga, Djarindjin and Ardyaloon.

Over three days, we had the opportunity to sit down with community, answer questions and provide practical support alongside banks, super funds, financial counsellors, consumer advocates and government services.

From finding lost super and unclaimed money, to completing money health checks and connecting people with culturally safe services, the focus was on meeting people where they’re at and supporting them with the things that matter to them and their families.

Financial Wellness Outreach is about helping bridge that gap by bringing services directly to community, in a way that is accessible, culturally safe and centred on connection.

In this episode we asked Ana, what would you tell a First Nations woman who wants to create financial freedom for herself and future generations?

For Ana, the starting point is understanding what financial freedom actually looks like for you.

It might be owning a home or reaching a particular financial goal. But it might also be having the freedom of choice and opportunity, being able to make decisions for yourself and your family, move when you need to, support the people around you, or have greater flexibility in how you spend your time.

For many First Nations women, our financial decisions don't exist in isolation. Our understanding of what we want our money to enable can be deeply connected to the people around us.

So rather than starting with someone else's definition of wealth, Ana suggests starting with your own vision, then working backwards.

What do you want your future to look like? What would give you more choice? And what small steps could you take today to move towards it?

Start with what you can, even starting with $5 to $20 a week can be a step towards a much bigger goal over time.
