Northern Life Members Handicap at Glenaroua on Sun 31st May

Around 30 riders turned up for this years rescheduled Life Members handicap at the tough Glenaroua circuit that tested out the riders in cool 8-10degC with variable sunny or grey misty conditions. Amazingly a handful or riders backed up racing on the same circuit the day prior with Northern Combine so chapeau to Michael K, Stephen S, Kaz M, Tommy M and anyone else not mentioned.

8 groups set off from the CFA start line at 10am with the scratch bunch of 3 away 44mins later under the control of Faye Logan for 2 x 32.5 km laps with around 850m of total elevation.

The day though belonged to scratch as they set about reeling in all the other groups to take 1st and 2nd by Steven Drake and Aaron Christiansen respectively. From the 12 min group Luke Markof continued his recent good form and powered to the finish line to take 3rd place ahead of scratch rider Stephen Kilpatrick and Mr consistent Garry Clively (6:30 bunch). Tom McDonough (12 min) who seems to reserve his best form for the handicaps rounded out the top 6 places

Big thanks to handicapper & timing Bruce and Faye Logan on rego. Albert Rain (commissaire / lead car) and David Halliday (Van & Setup) for arriving at 8am for a course inspection. Chooka for flag and post ride refreshment duties. Big thanks to our corner marshals and volunteers for todays race namely Paul Wilson, David Drew, Colin Morris, Ian Buckingham. Thanks also to Kon Kakris wife Annette for taking on the first aid duties . The club can’t put on these races without the support of our members and supporters so please make a point of thanking them next time you cross paths.

Congrats to the days winners and place getters:

2nd - Aaron Christiansen (scratch)

This Sunday we are celebrating our life members with the “Life Members Handicap” when we recognise the ongoing commitment our life members have, and continue, to make to our club. What better way to celebrate our valued life members than to hold a handicap in their honour on the same circuit we use for our club championships.
The weather forecast is looking like a perfect day for racing and on offer are prizes for line honours, fastest male & female, and fastest over 65 – so get your entries in before they close midday on Friday here: https://entryboss.cc/races/29986
We still need some volunteers to ensure a safe and compliant race so if you or a family member can assist, please sign up here: https://signup.com/go/VqOYupE

Northern Cycling Criteriums at National Boulevard on Sunday 24th May 2026

After last weeks cancellation due to wet weather 60 riders competed across grades A through E in cloudy but mild, still conditions perfect for racing.

It was a bunch finish for A grade with sprint specialists Scott Gregory and Luke Markof crossing ahead of Iain Clark in a solid return to his racing at National Boulevard.

In B grade the pace was on from the first lap with multiple surges and breakaway attempts that were ultimately brought back but were too much for a handful of riders that were spat out the back during the process. In the end trial rider Adam Caldwell in his second race won comfortably with the fastest lap of the day across all grades (46.7 km/h) ahead of Ross Clark and Dennis Markouras.

In C grade a breakaway of 3 riders (Nathan D’Arcy, John Mitsinikos and Rachel Huxley) got away and eventually lapped the rest of the C grade field just before the end.

D grade ended in a bunch sprint with Robert Castellani, Jason McHeyzer and Joe Caruana taking the top 3 places respectively. No vision of E grade but drop it in the comments if anyone wishes to add a race report.

Congratulations to the days winners and place getters and also big thanks for the helpers and volunteers that ensure we can run these events in a safe and efficient manner.

Tracey Romans Memorial Crit Races on Sunday 10th May 2026

It was a smaller field than usual that contested the Sundays Tracey Romans Memorial crits with A grade largely absent and the remaining few rolled into B grade. No doubt the suspect forecast, early damp conditions and Mothers Day had an impact on numbers but those who raced got through without incident and enjoyed some competitive racing. It was also great to have a number of ladies racing again competing for overall and ‘One Tough Lady’ awards.

In B grade, 3 riders made a break at around the 40 min mark and were not seen again until the finish with the remainder given the bell before the breakaway so they got to witness the finish from the sidelines. C grade also split evenly early into 2 with the breakaway also staying clear until the finish line. No reports from D or E grade racing but send anything through on messenger and will add it.

Thanks to the officials and volunteers for todays racing and Albert for conducting the presentations whilst Tim was away.
There was no prize money from the days racing however medals were awarded and entry fees from the days racing will be donated to an Ovarian cancer research charity.

Congratulations to the days winners and place getters:

The wet road surface meant no timing wire could be placed across the road so unfortunately no MyLaps electronic timing results for this race.

Tracey Romans Memorial Criteriums Update

Just a heads up to members that races this Sunday 10th May at National Boulevard will now start at the regular start time of 9am for all grades and there won't be separate races for the ladies as originally advertised. This is due to concerns around sufficient numbers, competing events and other factors.

There are still 3 separate awards up for grabs for the women racing on the day as well as regular medals across grades A-E in place of prize money which will be donated to an Ovarian Cancer Charity.

Fingers crossed for the weather & hope to catch you on Sunday!

Top Tech Panels Northern Cycling Benghazi Handicap - Lancefield 25/4/2026

In contrast to last years wet event - the 46th running of the Benghazi handicap was conducted in near perfect conditions with more than 100 riders competing in mild sunny conditions albeit with a strong Northerly breeze to contend with.

This year there were 11 bunches with scratch departing 46 minutes after the 1pm limit bunch of 3 riders and the pace was on immediately which combined with some strong cross winds in places lead to the rapid fracturing of a number of bunches and a relatively high number of DNF’s.

This year success came largely with the early bunches with the winner and place getters from 4th limit grouping (25 min) accounting for the largest proportion of the placings with scratch and the later bunches largely unable to haul them in.
Ladies also represented a good proportion of the top 10 including Aoife Reid the winner and ladies fastest time.

Unfortunately there was also an accident in the run up to the line involving 3 riders with one requiring hospital treatment so our thoughts are with the Geelong rider in question and we wish him a speedy recovery.

Big thanks to Nick Nomikos of Top Tech Panels whose continued generous sponsorship of this race enables us to put on the best race and prize money on the Victorian masters cycling calendar.

A callout as well to Maureen Cross, daughter of founding club member Tom Stewart, who couldn't make it this year and generously donated a large sum of money to the club. Maureen normally presents the impressive fastest time trophy which bares her fathers and John Stewarts name.

Presentations following the racing were again held at the Lancefield bowls club who put on a great spread and thanks to those members who brought a small share plate to share.

Congratulations to Saturdays winners and place getters:

1st - Aoife Reid (25 min)
2nd - Jarrod Boyd (25 min)
3rd - Chris Fenech (28 min)
4th - Richard McCorkell (25min)
5th - Rachel Huxley (25 min)
6th - Meredith Clark (25 min)
7th - Matthew Freeman (7 min)
8th - Andrew Connell (25 min)
9th - Jesse Thomas (9 min)
10th - James Hender (9 min)

1st unplaced lady - Julie Wood (28 min)
1st unplaced over 65 - Trevor Coulter (9 min)

Fastest time - Robbie Hucker (scratch)
Fastest lady - Aoife Reid (25 min)

Bunch winners
Robbie Hucker (scratch)
Steven Drake (3 min)
Matthew Freeman (7 min)
Jesse Thomas (9 min)
John Hiatt (13 min)
Daryl Suiter (17 min)
John Lejcak (21 min)
Aoife Reid (25 min)
Chris Fenech (28 min)
Danny Whelan (33 min)
Robert Castellani (46 min)

Many thanks as usual to the marshals, first aiders, officials and volunteers that ensure this event can be run in a safe and efficient way. Special call out to Bruce in charge of handicapping and electronic timing, Faye on registration and Albert Rain (Commissaire) who also coordinated the overall race management plus our ever present flag man Chooka. Big kudos also to our Northern club members who made themselves available to help out at the most important race on our calendar. Nickolas Bird, Rae Lesniowska, Ross Clarke, Paul Wilson, John Hasouras, Colin Morris, Shane Dwyer, Michael Hartmann, Annette Kakris (wife of Kon - who also helped out with the first aid) and David Drew. Also thanks to Vince Sinni for coordinating much of the transponder admin and prize money.

Full results should be available soon on MyLaps however there were some issues with some of the transponders so apologies in advance to those impacted.

Next week its back to National Boulevard for more crit racing and entries are open and available here https://entryboss.cc/races/28796
