CBP exists to assist churches in Melbourne, Australia and the world to be equipped in expository preaching. In a partnership between St James’ Old Cathedral, West Melbourne and CMS Australia, CBP equips and trains preachers in Melbourne and around the world. CBP is led by its Director, Michael Raiter, former Principal of the Melbourne School of Theology

What difference can thoughtful feedback make to a preacher?

Preaching can sometimes feel like a ministry we practise alone. Yet constructive feedback, encouragement and guidance can help us recognise areas for growth and continue developing over time.

Reflecting on his experience with CBP’s preaching workshops, Gavin Poole shared:
“Mike’s feedback was very valuable. As a result, I’ve been able to improve my preaching over time.”

This is one of the reasons CBP exists: to equip, encourage and support preachers as they seek to communicate God’s Word faithfully and effectively.

What is preaching?

John Stott reminds us that preaching is more than explaining ideas. It is opening the inspired text faithfully and sensitively so that God’s voice is heard and his people respond in obedience.

CBP exists to strengthen biblical preaching, but what does that look like in practice?

Sometimes it looks like a room full of preachers learning together.

Sometimes it is a conversation with someone facing a difficult season in ministry.

It can involve preparing training, developing resources, travelling to serve churches or simply encouraging someone to keep preaching God’s Word faithfully.

The settings may be different, but the purpose remains the same:

To equip and encourage those entrusted with preaching the Bible.

Through stronger biblical preaching, churches are helped to hear, understand and respond to God’s Word.

Which part of CBP’s ministry would you like to see more of?

“Be still and know that I am God.”

Psalm 46:10 is often used as an invitation to slow down, stop talking and find a quiet place in God’s presence.

That may be good advice, but is that what this verse means?

Psalm 46 describes roaring waters, quaking mountains, nations in turmoil and wars across the earth.

Then God addresses the warring nations:

“Stop your fighting! I am God! I will be exalted!”

This is not a gentle invitation to relax. It is a powerful declaration from the sovereign God who brings wars to an end and calls the nations to submit to him.

The context gives us a very different understanding of this frequently quoted verse.

That’s hermeneutics.

Right understanding leads to right explanation, which leads to right application.
