Happy Women of Colour Day sis ✨

Today we take a moment to reflect on and honour the leadership, care, imagination and resilience of women of colour everywhere 🫶🏿

We also thought that today is a good opportunity to share a few opportunities currently moving through our networks: from national movement spaces like to global gatherings such as through and ~ from discounted access to free exhibition space and feminist hub space bookings.

If any of these opportunities are calling you, please step into it. Apply, book, attend.

Our voices belong in these rooms.

If you’d like to receive opportunities as they arise, you can join our Women of Colour Melbourne mailing list via membership (link in the bio - it’s free!).

Happy New Year 💝 We hope that the festive season treated you kindly ~

We’re back and working in the background 👩🏽‍💻, stepping into the new year with shared intention and grounded in vision.

We’ve taken time to reflect on what it means to be Women of Colour…honouring our diversity, our shared experiences, and our commitment to reflexivity as we grow 💗

Our commitment continues to clarify:
Strengthen the foundation 🔨
Have more and bigger conversations🎙️
Build the house that holds our beating heart 🏡

Spaces gifted to us, by us, for us.
For healing. For connection. For thriving ✨

As we wrap up the year, we want to say a heartfelt thank you.

Thank you to everyone who connected with us at . For the conversations, the encouragement, and the love. It meant so much to meet women of colour, allies, and to see such warmth for the work we’re building together 🫶🏿

We’re deeply grateful to our board and committee members, those re-elected, the new faces joining us, and those stepping away after giving their time, care, and energy to the cause ✨Your contributions have shaped this year more you know.

2025 brought new moments for the gathering and community care. Thank you to every single one of you who met us along the way - artists, speakers, way-finders, knowledge holders and sharers. We remain committed to learning, listening, and growing alongside you as we move forward together.

Wishing everyone a gentle, restorative and connective festive season. More to share more in the new year…and yes, keep an eye out for a few long-OVERDUE snaps from our 2025 gathering 😜💗

🌿 Honouring Country with Aunty Annette Xiberras 🌿

We’re deeply honoured to have Aunty Annette Xiberras, a proud Wurundjeri Woiwurrung and Wamba Wemba woman, deliver our Welcome to Country at the Women of Colour Melbourne Gathering 2025.

With over 38 years of experience in cultural heritage, Aunty Annette has been a trailblazer, from being one of the first Cultural Heritage Officers in Victoria to founding Urban Colours Arts, the first Aboriginal and historical archaeological company owned and managed by an Aboriginal woman.

Her lifelong dedication to protecting Country, uplifting community voices, and preserving culture continues to inspire generations. We’re honoured to begin our gathering grounded in her wisdom, leadership, and the living culture of the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people.

🌟 Keynote Highlight: Samantha Ratnam 🌟

From her early life in Sri Lanka to leading change in Melbourne, Samantha Ratnam’s journey is one of courage, compassion, and unshakeable conviction.

As the child of migrants, she grew up valuing community, belonging and believing in a future where no one is left behind. With decades of leadership in government, advocacy, and organising, Samantha has helped secure homes for renters, stood up for climate justice, reform, and lifted up voices too often silenced.

Her keynote, “Culture is Our Power: Why This Moment Needs All of Us to Use It,” will explore how our identities, histories, and collective culture are not just background stories — they are actionable power that can reshape public life when we step forward together.

📅 When: Saturday 11 October
📍 Where: RMIT City Campus, Building 80, Level 4

🎟️ Don’t miss this chance to be inspired and mobilised. Join us for Samantha’s keynote and let’s show just how powerful our culture can be.

📚 Speaker Spotlight: Marina Sano 📚

Love books? 📖 This one’s for you!

Join Marina Sano, co-founder of Amplify Bookstore, to explore the literary landscape in an un-book club! 🌟

The un-book club has no assigned reading — instead, just come ready to talk about your favourite book(s) by a WOC. This will be the jumping off point for us to discuss how we can more critically navigate our reading and media consumption to examine whose stories and ideas we’re consuming and why, and how we can find more brilliant books by talented WOC. 🌺

About Marina:
Marina Sano (she/her) is a critic, publishing freelancer, and bookseller. She co-founded Amplify Bookstore and is an advocate for more diverse and representative publishing. She holds a BA in English Literature and a Master’s in Publishing and Communications. She lives and works on unceded Wurundjeri land.

📅 When: Saturday 11 October
📍 Where: RMIT City Campus, Building 80, Level 4

Come for the books, stay for the community.
