It’s always wonderful to hear from Old Haileyburians looking to reconnect with the OHA community.
“My name is Monica (Qingzhou) Liu, and I graduated from Haileybury in 2015. I am writing to express my interest in reconnecting with the Old Haileyburians community. While I have not been actively involved with the community since graduating, I have been following OHA's social media and found it lovely to see some familiar faces from my cohort.
I have recently been reflecting on the important role Haileybury played in my journey, as this was one of the first communities where I felt welcome and developed a sense of belonging after arriving in Australia in 2014.
I am now settling in Sydney and working full-time at USYD as a health researcher, focusing on nutrition interventions and diabetes support trials. I genuinely enjoy my roles in research, education, and mentoring in the academic setting, and I have been fortunate to be supported by many wonderful educators throughout my journey. Because of this, I have recently been thinking back to my two years at Haileybury and feel a strong desire to give back to the community that had such a positive influence on me.
I would be delighted to stay connected with the OHA community and would be happy to support initiatives to empower the young generation, particularly young women interested in health, science, research, and academia. I would welcome opportunities to contribute where I can, whether through mentoring and/or career conversations.
As a former international student, I understand the cultural adjustment and challenges that many new international students may experience. Supporting students through this transition has become my passion in tertiary education. Through my teaching and student administration roles, I have also developed a solid understanding of university pathways, applications, and student support services. I find it rewarding to help students explore their options and make informed decisions about their future studies and careers. I believe this is something that could also be valuable for secondary school students.
I look forward to reconnecting and becoming involved with the community."
