A billboard has been spotted driving around Melbourne’s CBD depicting the Premier as a witch alongside signage calling for ‘Victorians to ‘ditch the witch’.

We’ve been here before and it’s hard to believe we are here again in 2026. This type of misogynistic signage and slogan was previously used to targeted Australia’s one and only woman Prime Minister. It wasn’t acceptable then, and it isn’t acceptable now.

Gendered abuse aimed at Victoria’s Premier isn’t accidental. It’s designed to wear women down and that being a leader AND a woman comes at a personal cost. We can do better. We must do better. If not for us, for our future.

The standards you walk by, are the standards you accept. That’s why we are calling this out. Words matter and this type of signage designed to attack our leaders because of their gender is simply unacceptable.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums and care givers 🧡

So aside from the flowers and the sleep in that are hopefully a non-negotiable for mum this Mother’s Day, what else could really turn the dial for future generations of mothers?

📢 Victorian Budget 2026/2027

While we are relieved to see no significant cuts to programs impacting women, girls and gender-diverse Victorians, it's clear that this isn't the same as progress.

Most of today's commitments are short-term, while real impact requires long-term investment.

What we welcomed in the 2026/27 Budget:

🔸 $4.8 billion in funds positively impacting gender equality (up from $4.4B)
🔸 Continued support for Victoria's 12 women's health organisations
🔸 Funding for Sexual Assault Services Victoria, Victims' Legal Service, and Women and Mentoring
🔸 Reinstatement of Women's Leadership Program to support young women and those living in our regions.

What was missing:

Any meaningful investment in programs for men, boys and gender-diverse people, despite Victoria recently appointing its first ever Minister for Men and Boys.

With a state election on the horizon, GEN VIC is calling on all parties to be clear and transparent about their commitment to gender equality infrastructure, women's health, leadership pathways and prevention of family violence.

That’s a wrap on this year’s Women Deliver!

2026 brought the world to Naarm - and put a spotlight on the power of local, First Nations and Pacific feminist leadership.

Change called us. We laughed, we cried, we danced and we despaired. But above all, we connected.

So what did we learn over the few days?

The message was clear: progress on gender equality is under pressure, but the path forward is stronger when we collaborate and are led by those with lived experience.

The focus now is action - shifting power, backing communities, and turning global momentum into real change here in Victoria.

Shout out to all of you who visited our exhibit space, said hello as we passed by and took the time to learn more about the amazing work happening across our state.

Special thank you to our own Rani Engineer
for bringing the exhibit space together (and creating this fab wrap up video)!

Until we meet again 🧡

Today, we pause to mark ANZAC Day and honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of all who have served.

At Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC), we also take this moment to recognise the often overlooked contributions of women and gender-diverse people in times of conflict and peacekeeping - past and present. From frontline roles to vital work behind the scenes, their service has shaped history, though it has not always been equally recognised.

As we reflect, we acknowledge the importance of telling a fuller, more inclusive story - one that honours all who have served and continues to challenge inequality in every space, including our institutions and commemorations.

Lest we forget.

Petrol prices may have eased slightly but the cost of living and particularly housing continues to exacerbate difficult challenges for women.

ICYMI, Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC) was in the news over the weekend discussing rising housing and women’s health costs.

Our CEO Micaela Drieberg said it was alarming to see healthcare becoming “a luxury that many women simply can’t afford.”

Thanks to ’s Alesha Capone for highlighting this important challenge and Diana Connell for sharing your story.
