Life Saving Victoria extends our sincere condolences to Brad Maunsell’s family, friends, former colleagues at AUSTSWIM, and all who knew and worked with him.

Brad made a significant contribution to aquatic education and the broader water safety sector, including through his leadership at AUSTSWIM and his commitment to supporting swim schools, swim teachers and drowning prevention across Australia.

He will be remembered with respect and gratitude across the sector.

Isuzu UTE Australia has been a great partner throughout the patrol season and continues to support local clubs in many ways.

Mentone Lifesaving Club was proud to have Southland Isuzu Ute as a major sponsor of the Mentone Open Water Swim, an event they have supported for the past three years.

In March, over 400 swimmers enjoyed perfect conditions as they took on distances from the Splash & Dash to the main 10km event. The turnout and support showed how strong our local lifesaving community is.

Thank you to the Mentone LSC swim committee and all the club volunteers who made the event a success, and to Southland Isuzu Ute for their continued support.

He came to Australia with a dream to protect others. Now he’s turning it into reality.

For St Kilda Life Saving Club member Markus Marandi, lifesaving is more than an activity. It’s a part of his identity.

Markus found it hard to move from Iran to Australia without his family, but joining St Kilda LSC gave him a sense of belonging.

Dedicated to lifesaving, Markus has earned his Silver Medallion in Aquatic Safety and is now working towards becoming a Patrol Captain.

His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“I’ve not come across such a highly motivated new young member,” said St Kilda LSC President Warren Clarke.

Markus now works as a pool lifeguard at Kensington Community Aquatic and Recreation Centre and continues to build his skills to achieve a bigger goal: a future in emergency services, where he can help protect the Australian community he is proud to call home.

For Markus, though, the people around him are what matter most.

“Being away from family in Australia has not always been easy, but you have all made me feel like I am part of a family here.”

This is what lifesaving is all about: community, purpose, and people supporting each other to thrive.

Nicole Dean originally became a member of Altona Life Saving Club to use the showers. Now, she’s on their committee!

The community and cammeraderie, she said, drew her in.

“I’ve loved it. I’ve made some really good friends. Everyone’s been so wonderful and welcoming. I couldn’t be happier,” she said.

An ocean swimmer in her spare time, Nicole signed up to the club with a few friends to use facilities after being out on the water. This led to her getting her Bronze, patrolling, participating in lifesaving sport and assisting with training.

When she offered to help process some memberships, she was asked to take on something bigger.

“I was asked, ‘how would you like to do administration?’” she said.

“They had an opening and I thought, ‘I can do that’.”

The administrator’s role has seen Nicole taking on extensive behind-the-scenes work in all aspects of club life from patrolling and sport to membership queries, training and communications.

“I really went from zero to 100. It’s been a big year. It’s been a really big year,” she said.

“I’ve had the best time. It’s nice to see how everything runs behind the scenes.”

She was proud to be able to contribute to her club, and the lifesaving movement as a whole.

“Lifesaving is a great cause, a great organisation to be part of, and I’m glad to be doing my bit,” she said.

If you’ve ever thought about joining lifesaving, this could be your year to volunteer.

She’s 13 years old and has already completed more than 130 patrol hours as a volunteer lifesaver.

What’s more, she racked up all those hours in her first patrol season!

Charlee-Faith joined Sandringham Life Saving Club at the end of 2024. Her parents saw it as a good opportunity for her to learn water safety skills.

After a season of Nippers, she stepped up to get her Surf Rescue Certificate in December last year so she could take part in patrols. Since then, Sandringham LSC has become “another home”.

“I was down there almost every weekend. I did four days at the end of the season for the long weekend,” she said.

“I really love it. I love going to lifesaving!”

A desire to help her community, and the exploits of the famed Bondi Beach lifeguards, inspired her to get involved.

“I grew up really loving Bondi Rescue,” she said.

“When I turned 13, I could do my SRC. I wanted to learn more skills as a medic and help people too.”

On top of her patrolling, Charlee-Faith has provided water safety to Nippers, and took part in an extended course on CPR to sharpen her skills further.

She hopes to use what she’s learned in lifesaving to make an even bigger contribution in the future.

“I would really love to be a paramedic or a surgeon, or go further with my lifesaving,” she said.

If you’ve ever thought about joining lifesaving, this could be your year to volunteer.

Last summer was a memorable one for the Viljoen family, who stepped up in a big way to support Anglesea SLSC and the lifesaving movement.

Nadine, Bruce and their 13-year-old daughter Logan had been part of the club’s non-patrolling members for a few years. This season, though, they decided they wanted to do more.

“We had spent two seasons as parents on the beach, watching from the sidelines. At some point, it felt important to step in and contribute,” Nadine said.

Logan completed her Surf Rescue Certificate, Bruce got his Bronze Medallion and Nadine undertook her officials accreditation.

Bruce and Logan began patrolling together at Anglesea, keeping beachgoers safe in the water. Logan also assisted with water safety at the club, on top of participating in lifesaving sport.

Nadine took on officiating beach and ocean events, including the Junior Lifesaving Carnival held at Ocean Grove in February this year.

Ramping up their volunteer activities had been highly rewarding, Nadine said, and had helped to bring them closer together as a family.

“We leant into our community, found where we could add value, and it naturally became part of our rhythm.” Nadine said.

“It brings you closer to the community, and brings you a sense of purpose.”

If you’ve ever thought about joining lifesaving, this could be your year to volunteer.

These are the faces of true legends. Our volunteers keep your beaches safe, make sure lifesavers are ready to help, and are the heart of every lifesaving club.

During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the people who make everything possible.

Each season, thousands of volunteers give their time to keep our communities safe.

They patrol beaches, respond to emergencies, teach the public, mentor new members, train and coach lifesaving athletes, and organise fundraising events for their community. They arrive early, stay late, and always put others first without expecting anything back.

This year’s theme, “Your Year To Volunteer,” reminds us that volunteering is more than giving time. It means making a real difference, learning new skills, and being part of something bigger.

Thank you to every volunteer. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment never go unnoticed. You are the heart of our movement and the reason our beaches stay safe.

If you’ve ever thought about joining in, this might be your year. ✨

Congratulations to Mornington Life Saving Club for winning the VicHealth Active Sport and Recreation Initiative of the Year at the Vicsport Awards.

This award is well deserved. The Mornington LSC Schools Program keeps making a real difference and now adds another achievement to its list, after also winning the Community Education Achievement Award at the LSV 2025 Awards of Excellence.

The program is made for primary and secondary students, helping more young people enjoy the beach, water, and being active safely. With hands-on lessons like basic first aid, CPR, lifesaving skills, and fun aquatic activities, students gain confidence and important safety knowledge they can use for life.

What makes this program special is its focus on inclusion and accessibility. Auslan-supported sessions help deaf participants, and subsidised spots make it easier for families with financial challenges to join. The team also uses a mobi-chair and adapts the program for students from different cultural and language backgrounds, making sure it reaches those who need it most.

So far, an amazing 3,860 students from 24 schools have taken part in water safety education.

This is a fantastic achievement that shows how community-led programs can make aquatic environments safer and more inclusive.
