Cancer Council Victoria Cancer Council Victoria is a cancer charity committed to preventing cancer, empowering people and saving lives. Prevent Cancer. Empower Patients. Save Lives.

Every year, more than 30,500 Victorians will be diagnosed with cancer, and nearly 11,000 will die from cancer. The number of cases will increase as our population grows and ages. Survival will also improve as we get better at early detection and treatment of cancer. Since our establishment in 1936, Cancer Council Victoria has developed an international reputation for our innovative work in cancer research, prevention and support. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, we play a leading role in reducing the impact of all cancers on all people.

This year, we're celebrating a major milestone - 90 years of relentless work tackling cancer.

And it’s the incredible support of people like you who have made this work possible.

We’ve come so far over the last 90 years. And together, we can keep improving how cancer is detected, treated and experienced, so that everyone can have the best possible outcome.

Thank you for creating change and giving hope to so many 💛

Judith Lucy has recently shared her breast cancer diagnosis in a video on Instagram, and we thank her for using this moment to remind others about the importance of looking after their breast health.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a timely reminder to stay on top of your breast screening. If you’re aged 50–74, you will be invited to have a free breast screen every two years.

It’s important for everyone to be breast aware and check for changes in your breasts. If you notice a change, don’t delay and speak to a doctor.

More than 100,000 Australians at higher risk of lung cancer accessed free CT scans in the first year of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program.

For Rob, it was the wake-up call he needed.

“[My doctor] told me I was eligible for a free lung scan and referred me straight away,” said Rob.

“Honestly, I was expecting bad news. I was shocked that [the results] were clear.”

This became a turning point. Rob quit smoking and has since made a range of lifestyle changes.

For others, screening has been potentially lifesaving, with more than 230 primary lung cancers detected in the first year, as well as other conditions such as emphysema and heart problems.

If you’re aged 50 to 70 and smoke or have in the past, you may be eligible for free lung cancer screening.

To learn more about the lung screening, speak to your doctor or visit lungcancerscreen.org.au

Michael first joined Relay for Life in 2011 to honour loved ones affected by cancer.

What began as a small team of six has since grown to more than 50 friends, family and members of his local running group all coming together to support the cause.

Following his own prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment in recent years, the event now carries an even deeper meaning.

“Relay is a big part of my life. For my family and I, it's about fighting cancer and doing what we can to make a difference. Spending one night feeling a little uncomfortable is nothing compared to what people facing cancer go through, and that's why we're so proud to fundraise and take part every year.”

Relay For Life Casey will run from 6pm Saturday 25 October to 12pm Sunday 26 October at Casey Fields Regional Athletics Centre.

Proudly supported by the City of Casey.

When Max's son was diagnosed with cancer, getting him the treatment he needed was crucial.

Like many regional Victorian families, that meant long drives, time away from work and significant out-of-pocket costs.

Our recent survey found more than 90 per cent of regional and rural people affected by cancer experienced travel and accommodation costs while accessing treatment.

That's why we’re joining with 18 organisations to call for reforms to Victoria's Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS), including increased travel and accommodation subsidies and a public review of the scheme.

No family should face financial hardship because they need to travel for cancer care.

Did you know there is a direct link between hepatitis B and liver cancer?

Hepatitis B is a virus that can affect your liver, and over time, long-term hepatitis B can increase the risk of liver cancer.

Hepatitis B can have no symptoms, but the good news is it can be detected with a simple blood test.

Vaccination is the best way to prevent hepatitis B infection.

If you already have hepatitis B, regular check-ups and treatment, if your doctor recommends it, can help you manage it.

Talk to your GP or healthcare provider about hepatitis B testing, vaccination or care.

Sisters Jodie Hayes and Tracey Maguire are on the cusp of an incredible milestone, raising almost $100,000 for Cancer Council Victoria.

For more than 15 years, they've brought together friends, family and supporters through Girls' Night In, helping fund vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services.

"Each year we're reminded just how many people have been touched by cancer and how willing our community is to come together to support one another," Jodie said.

"We recently lost a close friend to breast cancer, which has reinforced why being involved in Girls' Night In is so significant for us both."

This spring, host your own Girls' Night In and help make a difference. Whether it's a dinner party, movie night, book club or catch-up with friends, every event helps support Victorians impacted by cancer.

Cancer doesn't just affect people's health. It can impact work, income, housing, financial security and access to support.

The new Counting the Cost of Cancer: Legal & Financial Impacts on Victorians report from the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, found legal and financial challenges are a common part of the cancer experience, with many people facing unexpected costs, workplace challenges and difficulties accessing support.

Drawing on the experiences of more than 200 Victorians affected by cancer, the report calls for stronger protections and support, including:

💼 Workplace reforms
⛑️ Improvements to insurance and superannuation systems
🛟 Updated social security supports
💲 Earlier access to legal and financial assistance

If you are currently navigating a cancer experience, contact our 13 11 20 information and support line to talk with trained professionals, who can assist with information and referral to our financial counselling or legal support programs.

Thanks to the Victorian Legal Services Board Grants Program for funding this project.

Around 535,000 Australians. Every year.

That’s how many Australians are estimated to have at least one common non-melanoma skin cancer removed each year.

The simplest way to reduce your risk? 👕 Slip, 🧴 Slop, 👒 Slap, 🌳 Seek and 🕶️ Slide whenever the UV index is 3 or above.
