Fishcare Victoria Inc.

Fishcare Victoria Inc. Fishcare Victoria aims to provide educational services to the broader community that fosters responsible fishing practices

Fishcare Victoria, supported through the Recreational Fishing Licence Fund, leads the way in educating new generations of recreational fishers in responsible and sustainable fishing practices in Victoria. Fishcare commenced in 1995 with a focus on angler education around the highly regarded fishery of the Gippsland Lakes. From this beginning, Fishcare has expanded to encompass five coastal-‐based

Fishcare groups and an inland group covering Victoria’s Central Highland region. All Fishcare groups have a membership base of volunteers and each group is independently incorporated with a Committee of Management overseeing their management and operation. This state-wide network of passionate and dedicated volunteers continues to actively work and respond to the needs of their local communities in regard to both local and state-wide fisheries educational issues. Raising the level of public awareness and angler education continues to be the core function of the Victorian Fishcare Program. This is achieved by conducting educational fishing clinics, attendance at fishing expos, shows and other local community events. The Victorian Fishcare Program has also established a wide range of valued and ongoing collaborative partnerships. Importantly the relationship between Fishcare and Fisheries Victoria (within the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries) continues today aiding to achieve their collective objectives of strengthening appropriate angler behaviours and fishing practices. The establishment of Fishcare Victoria in 2010 as an umbrella body for the five Victorian Fishcare groups has provided Fishcare with an improved level of coordination, statewide consistency and professionalism and also helped groups to reduce their individual workloads by centralising some of the administrative requirements for all groups. Now, 18 years on, the Victorian Fishcare Program remains enthusiastic and ambitious about its role in educating the next generation of recreational fishers in Victoria. Collectively, Fishcare groups aim to grow, diversify and deliver over the next three years by:
• Ensuring the foundations are strong through sound governance and volunteer and staff management
• Recruiting a diversity of new volunteers and establishing Fishcare groups in new locations
• Securing additional support for the program including staff and investment
• Delivering quality educational programs to Victorian anglers, particularly school age children
• Participating in aquatic habitat protection and rehabilitation activities.

PICKING YOUR FIRST FISHING ROD 101

Picking your first fishing rod can feel a little confusing… rods come in all lengths, thicknesses, materials and ratings.
After 15+ years building custom rods, trust me… I’m still learning too.

But don’t overcomplicate it.

For beginners, a 7ft rod rated around 3–6kg matched with a 3 - 4000 size reel is a
great all-round setup for bread and butter species and learning the basics.

Longer rods = more casting distance. Shorter rods = better for close-range control.

Now… get into your local tackle store, ask some questions, and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Your Captain speaking…Tight lines 🎣

A couple of weeks ago we all got together for the first ever Fishcare Staff v Volunteers Urban Fishing Comp down at Docklands.

Unfortunately the fish clearly weren’t informed because nobody caught a thing… not even a sympathy fish to save the scoreboard Ha-Ha

But honestly, that’s half the fun. Plenty of laughs, good banter and an awesome chance to catch up with facilitators and volunteers from all the different regions.

Absolute legendary bunch of people who give up their time to help others learn fishing and care for our waterways.

Sometimes it’s not about the fish… it’s about the people, the laughs and being part of a bloody great community.

Already looking forward to the next event!

TIP OF THE WEEK — Focus on what’s biting

April–May is a real transition period across Port Phillip and Western Port. Water temps are dropping, the days are getting shorter, and the fishery is shifting gears.

Right now…
King George Whiting — your go-to. They’re around all year and are fishing well over sand and broken ground.

Flathead — still a great option and worth targeting over the shallows and patches of rubble.

Gummy Sharks — prime time as the water cools, with both land-based and boat options.

Australian Salmon — starting to fire up. Keep an eye out for birds and surface bust-ups.

Elephant Fish — beginning to show, especially through Western Port.

“Barrels” (Tuna) — offshore for those keen to head wide.

Bottom line: don’t keep chasing what was biting. Fish what’s biting now.

Never look a cephalopod in the eye… they’ll sq**rt you every time 😅

In all seriousness, squid ink is harmless to us - just a natural defence made of melanin (same stuff in our skin and hair) used to confuse predators while they make a quick getaway.

After a pretty rough week of weather, it was unreal to finally see some sun and the wind ease off a touch… and today at Portsea Pier it showed.

Plenty of quality squid coming out to play and a few kids getting a proper “hands-on” school holiday experience ha-ha!

That’s what it’s all about this time of year - getting the kids outdoors, having a crack, learning something new…and sometimes wearing it too.

Get amongst it while the holidays are still rolling 👊

10/04/2026

Absolute chaos at Mornington Pier Tuesday morning for the start of the FISH ON! Kids School Holiday Clinics.

Massive school of juvenile snapper (pinkies) pushed right up on the surface, and the local seal just sitting there picking them off one by one. Nature doing its thing.

Autumn’s a funny time… bigger fish start to move on outside as temps drop, but these smaller pinkies hang around in numbers. Plenty of bait still in the system, cooler water, less pressure… they’re happy cruising the shallows and schooling up tight.

Good reminder… just because the “season slows”, doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on.

Get amongst it this weekend - still school holidays. You never know what awesome stuff you might stumble across 👀

CLEAR THE CARP – MOUNT EMU CREEK | MARCH 29

What a way to kick things off.

Huge turnout from locals and legends travelling from near and far to be part of the first Catch a Carp event at Skipton. While the carp count was low (we’ll take that as a win), the energy, laughs and community spirit were next level.

Big shoutout to the Skipton community - and especially the Year 5 & 6 students from Skipton Primary School - who absolutely brought it. You made the day.
From first casts and classic tangles to pulling out old gear, traffic cones and the odd surprise, it was hands-on, fun and full of learning.Keith Bell’s carp prep and cooking demos had people hooked, while OzFish Unlimited had everyone dialled into what’s really going on beneath the surface with their habitat displays.

Wrapped up with a ripper awards session celebrating the weird, the wonderful and everything in between.

This is what it’s all about - community, education and looking after the waterways we love.
