There is no single pathway to rebuilding after family violence.

For one woman, it may mean finding safe and stable housing. For another, it could be navigating legal issues, rebuilding financial independence or reconnecting with community.

For a child, it might mean returning to school, having space to process their experiences, rebuilding relationships or simply beginning to feel safe again.

At Emerge, we recognise that every woman and child brings their own experiences, needs and hopes for the future. Our child-centred approach also recognises children as victim-survivors in their own right, with their own individual needs for safety, healing and recovery.

That's why our support is individualised - working alongside women and children as they move towards safety, autonomy and healing.

Because rebuilding isn't about following one pathway. It's about having the right support to find your own.

Feeling understood - and knowing you're not alone - can be an important part of recovery.

This reflection was shared by a parent participating in Emerge's Back on Track program.

Back on Track supports children aged 5–12 who have experienced family violence, working alongside their safe caregiver to help children understand and process their experiences, build healthier ways of managing emotions and strengthen relationships.

For families navigating the impacts of family violence, having a safe space where their experiences are understood can be an important part of recovery.

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

On International Youth Day, we're reflecting on the importance of investing in the wellbeing, potential and futures of children and young people.

At Emerge, that means recognising that the impacts of family violence don't end when a child reaches safety.

Our innovative Back on Track program provides specialist early intervention for children aged 5–12 who have experienced family violence and are showing signs of aggressive or challenging behaviours.

Working with children alongside their safe caregiver, the program helps children understand and process their experiences, develop healthier ways of expressing and managing emotions, and strengthen relationships and social connections.

By intervening early, we can help children recover from trauma and work towards disrupting cycles of violence across generations.

Because what a child has experienced should not define their future.

This beautiful letter was shared with us by a child who wanted to express what they believe Emerge stands for. With permission from the child's family, we're honoured to share it with our community.

In just a few heartfelt sentences, she captured the essence of our work - helping women and children find safety, hope and the opportunity to build a brighter future.

Her final words say it best:

Family violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children in Australia and the most common form of child maltreatment.

For many families, leaving family violence means leaving behind their home, belongings, community and sense of security. Safe refuge is often the first step towards safety but it's also where women and children begin to heal, recover and rebuild their lives.

At Emerge, we provide more than a safe place to stay. We help women and children recover from trauma, rebuild their confidence and begin creating safer futures.

This Homelessness Week (August 3 - 9), your support can provide trauma-informed art, play and therapeutic resources that help children process their experiences, regulate their emotions and begin rebuilding their lives.

*SAFETY ALERT for 2pm today*

The Australian Government will test its new national emergency warning system (AusAlert) TODAY at 2pm AEST.

The test will be sent to compatible mobile devices across Australia.

For many people this will simply be a routine test. However, for people experiencing family violence, particularly those using a hidden or 'safe' phone as part of their safety planning, the alert could increase risk if the device is seen or heard.

If this affects you, or someone you know, it's important to plan ahead. Your safety comes first.

Consider:
• switching your device to Aeroplane Mode before the scheduled test if it is safe to do so
• making a plan in case your hidden or safe phone is seen or heard
• speaking with a support service if you are concerned about your safety

You can contact 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or 13YARN (13 92 76) for culturally safe support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

CORPORATE SERVICES DIRECTOR
About the Role:
We're looking for a Corporate Services Director to join our Executive team and lead the operational backbone of our organisation. Reporting to the CEO, you'll have a central role in strategic oversight and organisational performance. You will oversee finance, governance, risk, compliance, HR and business operations, ensuring Emerge meets its regulatory obligations and that the Emerge Board has clear, timely visibility of organisational performance. You'll manage a small multi-disciplinary team, and act as executive lead for our relationship with our external HR provider.

This is a senior, hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a complex regulatory environment and wants their operational expertise to directly enable frontline work that changes lives. You'll bring proven experience leading operations, risk, compliance or finance, governance and strategic skills, and a genuine commitment to Emerge's values.

CHILDREN'S CASE MANAGER
About the Role:
We're looking for a Children's Case Manager to lead specialist support for children and young people who have experienced or witnessed family violence. You'll provide trauma-informed, child-centred case management, deliver individual and family sessions, co-facilitate groups, and work alongside safe caregivers to rebuild the parent-child relationship.

This ongoing role is an exciting opportunity to elevate children's voices in case planning, provide therapeutic support toward long-term recovery, and help them participate and thrive, within a team guided by collaboration, respect, courage, creativity, inclusivity, impact and kindness.

Impact in Action: Legal Health at Refuge | Case Study

For women experiencing family violence, navigating family law and parenting arrangements can become a significant barrier to safety and recovery.

A client accessing Emerge's refuge sought legal advice after existing parenting orders continued to allow weekend visits with the children's father. Without a Family Violence Intervention Order (FVIO) in place, she was unsure of her legal rights and the options available to keep her family safe.

Through Emerge's Legal Health at Refuge partnership with Peninsula Community Legal Centre funded by the City of Kingston, she was able to access legal support onsite in a safe and familiar environment.

With timely legal advice and coordinated support, she was able to:
✔️ make a police report
✔️ obtain a Family Violence Intervention Order (FVIO)
✔️ receive guidance on navigating the family law system
✔️ access specialist legal services to begin the process of varying parenting orders through the Family Court.

Having legal support available within refuge removes barriers to justice, provides timely advice and helps women make informed decisions that strengthen safety for themselves and their children.
