LiverWELL welcomes a significant step forward for hepatitis B elimination in Australia.

This is the result of years of advocacy from Hepatitis Australia, ASHM and sector partners, and we’re delighted to see this barrier to care removed.

More clinicians being able to prescribe means more people living with hepatitis B can access the care they need.

From today, Australian clinicians no longer need specialist accreditation to prescribe s100 hepatitis B antiviral prescriptions.

This change is a major step towards eliminating hepatitis B as a public health threat in Australia. By increasing the number of clinicians able to prescribe treatment, more people can access the care they need, when they need it.

The reform reflects years of advocacy by ASHM, Hepatitis Australia, and sector partners, and reinforces our commitment to removing barriers to hepatitis B care. We will continue advocating for policies and programs that expand access to testing and treatment, reduce health inequities, and support Australia’s progress towards hepatitis B elimination targets.

For clinicians who are new to prescribing hepatitis B treatment, ASHM offers clinical support and expert guidance to build confidence and capability. For existing prescribers, we will continue to provide the same resources and support.

Register now for: B PART OF THE SOLUTION - Practical ways to help prevent liver cancer in your community.

If you work with people from culturally and linguistically different background, people from refugee or migrants background, Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, or people who inject drugs, you have a role to play in helping prevent liver cancer in the communities you work with.

Hepatitis B is a leading cause of liver cancer, yet this is often preventable. Many people are undiagnosed or not receiving the care they need to avoid this outcome. Organisations like yours are often trusted by people who might otherwise miss out on testing, care or support.

Join us for an interactive half-day to discuss how you support better health outcomes through the work you already do by helping people access information, testing, care and support. You don't need to be a hepatitis B expert to make a difference.

LiverWELL team members Radhika and Maddie recently attended the 16th Australasian Viral Hepatitis Conference in Fremantle, Western Australia, joining colleagues from across the sector for three days of learning and networking.

This year’s theme, “Every Voice, Everywhere: Turning ambition and experience into action,” highlighted the collective effort needed to improve viral hepatitis outcomes across Australasia; bringing together community leadership and lived experience with clinical expertise, research, policy and program delivery.

LiverWELL was proud to share our poster, “Learning English, Learning Hepatitis B,” showcasing our work with the Australian Migrant English Program (AMEP). The initiative integrates hepatitis B education into English language learning environments, creating opportunities for people from migrant and refugee communities to build language skills and learn about hepatitis B prevention, testing and treatment.

It was an inspiring few days of sharing ideas and reflecting on how we can turn our ambition for change into action for the communities we serve.

This Daffodil Day, we’re thinking of those affected by liver cancer.

Daffodil Day is a reminder of the importance of cancer awareness, research and support -including for people living with liver cancer and their loved ones.

Worldwide, up to 8 in 10 cases of liver cancer can be linked to hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection. While this is slowly changing, with vaccination and effective treatments for viral hepatitis helping to reduce rates of hepatitis-related liver cancer, it remains a significant cause for concern.

At LiverWell, we’re committed to raising awareness of viral hepatitis and liver cancer, and supporting better outcomes for those affected.

This year, our World Hepatitis Day campaign ‘Take The Next Step’ reached communities across Victoria through radio, billboard and media coverage, helping bring vital messages about hepatitis awareness, testing and treatment.

By sharing these messages in places where people live, work and travel, we're helping ensure more Victorians know that hepatitis is preventable, treatable and, in some cases, curable.

🎉 Thank you for getting involved this World Hepatitis Day!

We loved seeing our community come together last week to support World Hepatitis Day through activities, conversations and awareness-raising initiatives.

From Collingwood and Footscray to Horsham, Wodonga and Shepparton, communities across Victoria connected with information about viral hepatitis and liver health through education sessions, awareness events, testing opportunities and referral pathways.

These activities were made possible through collaborations with community organisations, health services and local partners committed to improving awareness and access to care. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Victorian Government for their continued support of LiverWELL.

Affected by fatty liver disease? We want to hear from you!

If you have been diagnosed with Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD - the most common type of fatty liver disease), or care for someone who has, we’d like to understand your experience.

MASLD can progress to more serious liver disease and can be an early warning sign of serious conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Today is Global Fatty Liver Day (11 June), and we are launching a new survey to better understand:

• How the disease was first detected
• The information and support received
• What you think policy makers need to know

About the name: MASLD is also known as MAFLD (Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease) and was previously called NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). We use the term MASLD to refer to this disease.

On 28 July, some of Victoria's most recognisable landmarks lit up green to help raise awareness of World Hepatitis Day and the importance of hepatitis awareness across our community.

We're grateful to our partners who helped bring visibility to World Hepatitis Day. Melbourne Town Hall, the Bolte Bridge, CityLink Sound Tube and the Geelong Waterfront Catenary Lights joined the national movement, glowing green in support of people affected by viral hepatitis and helping to highlight a health issue that affects over 74,000 Victorians.
