Who we are:
MUMPS (Melbourne Uni Medics Paediatric Society) is a paediatric special interest group dedicated to imparting knowledge and skills, fostering passion, and allowing for sharing of information about learning opportunities in paediatrics, for all students at the Melbourne Medical School. MUMPS was established in 2014 by a group of MD3 and MD4 students with a passion for paediatrics. What
we do:
We run lectures at RCH on a variety of medical, surgical, public health topics and practical/social issues in the paediatric clinical setting. After every second lecture session (every 6 weeks) we host a social function at a nearby venue. We will also run regular workshops to help students brush up on their paediatric skill-set, a paediatric elective night and research night, and a lecture-style revision series leading up to the exam period. Why we do it:
- To expand on the breadth of common medical and surgical topics already covered in the core curriculum
- To expand on paediatric practical skills including neonatal resuscitation, paediatric cannulation and practical/social aspects of dealing with kids in a clinical setting
- To expose students to leaders-in-their-field discussing recent advancements in their medical, surgical or public health specialty areas
- To foster enthusiasm among MD3s and MD4s who have completed their paediatric term and are considering paediatrics as a possible career path or practice interest
- To provide some paediatric exposure to MD1 and MD2s who may have chosen to study medicine because of an interest in Paediatrics but are yet to complete the core paediatric rotation
- To expose those students who were not lucky enough to spend time at RCH, to the RCH staff and setting
- To establish a general sense of community allowing for sharing of resources around student opportunities eg. research, electives, outpatient opportunities
