If you haven't heard about The Rose Read Bookshop () or made the time to head to Sydney's newest literary haven: this is your sign!

Founded by lifelong friends Stephanie Beck and Mischa Parkee, Rose Read is an independent bookshop built from a shared love of books, community, and the women who inspired them.

The shop is named in honour of Steph’s late mother, Rosemary, who was her biggest champion and called Summer Hill home for more than 30 years. It is also being opened in memory of her late grandmother, Marjorie, who instilled in Steph a love of books from an early age. Together with Mischa—whose own “nan-in-law” Rose became a much-loved inspiration and passionate reader—the pair have created a space that celebrates stories, connection and community.

More than just a bookshop, Rose Read is a welcoming gathering place where readers, families, browsers and gift-givers can connect through a shared love of books. The team acknowledges the long history of storytelling and gathering on the land where the shop stands and is passionate about championing diverse voices and books that surprise, challenge and inspire.

Whether you’re looking for your next great read, the perfect gift, or simply a welcoming place to spend an afternoon, Mischa, Steph, Lexie and Connor are ready to welcome you.

Mark your calendars! Love Your Bookshop Day 2026 is Saturday 10 October.

We’re excited to officially launch this year’s campaign and reveal our 2026 theme: Ask a bookseller. Shake up your shelf.

This year, we’re celebrating the important role booksellers play in helping readers discover new books, new authors and unexpected favourites. Whether you’re looking to shake up your usual reading, get back into books or simply don’t know what to read next, ask a bookseller.

This year’s artwork is by illustrator Bill Hope, whose wonderful illustrations capture the joy of finding your next great read and, in his words, “show booksellers as a tour guide to your next literary adventure”.

On 10 October, bookshops across Australia will be celebrating Love Your Bookshop Day in all sorts of wonderful ways. It’s an invitation to visit your local bookshop, connect with a bookseller and ask them to recommend something you might not have picked up yourself.

For now, save the date, follow along and get ready to shake up your shelf.

Not to alarm anyone but it's officially August!

This month we're delighted to share our usual 6 fiction, 6 non-fiction and 6 children and YA titles that will be in bookshops in August. While we share new releases every month, there's nothing typical about each book. These titles are hand selected by Australian booksellers who can't wait to place them into your hands and homes.

Conference posts coming to a close!
We got dressed up and headed over to the National Museum of Australia for the Gala Dinner and Awards Night!

We were delighted to have Bruce Pascoe in conversation with Magabala CEO Dr Lilly Brown (), as our pre-dinner guest speaker. We were given a look into Bruce’s upcoming book The European Mind, that brings together history, memoir and philosophy in a compelling work. Bruce mixed humour with the kind of toughtful insight and reflection, that you can expect from the author of Dark Emu.

Inside the stunning venue, where we had a dinosaur to our left, a car to our right, and a moth above us, Myf Warhurst () was our wonderful guest MC for the night. Myf is well-known for her long-term team captain role on Spicks and Specks, voicing characters on Bluey and her podcast, The Moment. Myf’s upcoming book, Middle Rage (), is publishing in August and we were enamoured by her personable and down-to-earth nature that carried us through the evening.

We had Zoe Cassim from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation () speak about the incredible work the ILF does and encouraged attendees to bid in the silent auction for two stunning artworks. All funds raised went towards supporting the imperative work the ILF does.

We were incredibly lucky to have national treasure and Australian legend, Magda Szubanski () join us as our special guest dinner speaker, to talk to us about her upcoming memoir I Can’t Tell You But I Will. A deeply personal insight into Magda’s life and caring for her mother, Magda had the room completely moved and was met with a standing ovation. It was an honour to hear directly from her and we’re sure booksellers went back to their shops to order copies in bulk. It comes out 29 September with

We had the joy of celebrating the fiction, non-fiction and children’s book of the year winners, as voted by booksellers. We also were delighted to award the booksellers of the year and recognise two Lifetime in Bookselling Achievements.

Thank you to everyone who attended and congratulations to all our winners! It was an incredible night.

Congratulations to Stefen Brazulaitis for receiving the ABA Lifetime Achievement in Bookselling Award!

The Lifetime Achievement in Bookselling Award recognises an individual bookseller for their extraordinary and sustained contribution to bookselling in Australia. The award honours long-standing dedication to their bookshop, celebrating those who have created a place that connects readers, champions books, and becomes part of the fabric of their community.

Stefen has been a bookseller for almost 35 years and is known around Perth as the guy you go to for science fiction and fantasy. His bookshop, Stefen's Books, is an independent bookshop and quietly remarkable institution in Perth's SFF reading scene. For local authors and publishers, he goes above and beyond to bring unknown and marginalised voices into the light.

Stefen started in the Perth bookshop industry, working in specialty SFF shop Supernova Books, Dymocks and Angus & Robertson franchises, and was a founding manager at Borders. In 2011, he took over from specialist SFF shop Fantastic Planet, reopening as Stefen's Books. In addition to his roles as an award-winning bookseller and bookshop proprietor, he has also written professional book reviews; delivered expert talks about science fiction; mentored junior booksellers and small business owners in the local book industry; organised events and managed stock and order fulfilment at fan conventions.

He is vigilant and proactive about creating a safe and inclusive space for all readers, both in his bookshop and at the book club meetings & book events. Stefen runs launch events for local authors, going above and beyond to uplift newcomers and introduce them to the SFF reading community. He is a willing teacher who openly shares mentorship and advice to those seeking to learn more about books, bookselling, and the book industry, and stands as a shining example of how to treat people with courtesy while celebrating a shared love of excellent reading material.

We were in awe at the number of testimonials we received for Stefen’s nomination and are honoured to celebrate someone integral to the bookselling industry.

Congratulations again Stefen!
