Yesterday, 09 April 2025, Melbourne Chicken Save held a special vigil in honour of our founder, Liz Dealey, who sadly passed away on the 28th of March.

It is our honour to carry on your legacy Liz. The outpouring of love, as well as stories of your impact on people's lives, is a testament to your dazzling character and passionate advocacy that spanned decades.

Thank you for all of your tireless dedication and for the countless lives you changed for the better throughout your rescue and rehabilitation work with Melbourne Chicken Rescue.

Rest in Power Liz.

Animal Save Movement wishes to honor and remember our comrade Liz Dealey, a compassionate and dedicated activist and cherished member of our community who sadly passed away on Friday.

Liz was the founder of our chapter Melbourne Chicken Save and also Melbourne Chicken Rescue, where she worked to rehabilitate and rehome rescued chickens. She fought tirelessly for animal rights in Australia for decades—organizing vigils, caring for sick and injured animals, and supporting the work of local sanctuaries. Liz's impact was immeasurable. She also fought relentlessly for human rights, and we are truly grateful for her strength and empathy.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Liz's family and loved ones. She will be dearly missed by so many—a testament to such a wonderful human being.

She’d drive up the driveway, car full of chicken food, music on, always with a chicken in the front seat next to her who was coming to live their life out here. No fuss, with her platinum blonde hair streaming behind her, she always had a job to do, and she always did it. She’d hand me her latest little stray or ex battery hen with tears in her perfectly eyelinered eyes and hug them and give them a kiss before handing them over to me. This was our routine. She’d take them in and I’d take them from her. From Melbourne Chicken Rescue to Lefty's Place, it was a well-worn routine - until yesterday. My straight talking friend with the heart of gold left the world yesterday after a fight with cancer. And she fought, Liz always fought everything. She spent her life fighting for what she believed in and had stood up for animals in every way possible for decades.

Liz was an actual rockstar, her formative years being the front woman in bands screaming in to the microphone where everyone heard her. In the animal rights world, she also screamed in so many ways and she will continue screaming for animals through me and through you and through her passion she has left with all of us. She wanted us all to understand that chickens were more than egg and meat machines, she just loved them so very much.

To Liz’s partner, family and friends, I send all the love in the world. Her energy and passion was so big that I don’t think it will ever leave any of us.

Our routine has now changed from her handing chickens over to me to care for to me sending my beautiful chickens on to Liz when they leave this world for her to watch over forever.

Love you Rockstar, you’ll shine anywhere you go.

Welcome to Melbourne Chicken Save

We aim to raise awareness of the misery and cruelty chickens are subjected to in the food industries through regular demonstrations and vigils around Melbourne, encouraging the public to transition to a plant based diet.

Melbourne Chicken Save is part of the Save Movement Worldwide Network who advocate for justice of animals and seeks to educate the public about veganism, a way of life that seeks to avoid animal use, exploitation, and harm as much as is practicable and possible. We oppose animal exploitation in all forms, and reject the notion that animal welfare practices, laws or regulations can provide any meaningful protection for victims of exploitation.

We maintain that educating the public about how and why to be vegan should be front and center of all animal advocacy campaigns, because only vegan advocacy can address the root cause of all animal abuse: human speciesism and its associated exploitative practices.

Our message is that Veganism is a matter of fundamental justice, not a “lifestyle”, or personal choice. It is simply something we owe anyone who is sentient.
