O. S. U.
The Maneki Neko, or Lucky Cat, is said to bring good fortune, success, and positive energy to those who welcome it.

As we prepare for training tomorrow, we are reminded that luck alone does not create success. Success is built through discipline, consistency, courage, and showing up when it matters most.

Every training session is an opportunity to improve. Every bow is a sign of respect. Every kiai is a declaration that you are committed to becoming a better version of yourself.

We are excited to welcome our Davies Karate whānau back on the dojo floor tomorrow. Whether you are a beginner taking your first steps or a senior student continuing your journey, your presence helps strengthen our dojo spirit.

Come ready to learn.
Come ready to challenge yourself.
Come ready to grow.

See you all tomorrow.

1 June 2026 marked an important milestone as we physically reconnected with our DK Kirikiriroa Dōjō.

While this has been a significant focus, Shihan Penita and I have also been working behind the scenes establishing affiliated satellite Dōjō throughout Aotearoa. We look forward to sharing these exciting announcements with you soon.

One of the greatest privileges of this journey has been reconnecting with our Yudansha. We are humbled and grateful to have trained so many outstanding karateka over the years, many of whom continue to carry the spirit of DK-Kyokushin wherever they go.

As we move towards July and welcome the rising of Matariki, the Māori New Year, we extend an invitation to all past Davies Karate students to come home.
Dōgi on.
Obi tied.
Ready to train.

There is a special kind of magic in our Osu and Kiai. A power that can only truly be felt when we stand, train, and grow together. To all past and present members of the Davies Karate whānau, we look forward to seeing you on the dōjō floor once again.

As I watched Shihan Duayne Davies training Justin and Andi at 6:00am this morning, I couldn't help but reflect on the thousands of hours spent over the decades training our own tamariki, when they were around the same age as these rising Kyokushin stars.

Today, Justin and Andi are preparing to represent Aotearoa at the Australian Kyokushin Championships in Sydney this August. While reminiscing, I asked them both how old they were and when they started training with DK.
Justin replied, "I started when I was 2. I'm nearly 15 now."
Andi smiled and said, "I started when I was 3, Shihan. I'm 12 now."How could I have forgotten?

Perhaps that's why I feel such joy watching these young men persevere, grow, and adapt to the demanding training methods of Shihan Davies. Teacher. Coach. Mentor. New Zealand Branch Chief.

Not many people in New Zealand Kyokushin Karate-ka can say they have produced three World Champions. For me, returning to Waikato and back to Kirikiriroa has been nothing short of magical. These are the very grounds where I forged my own journey and became a back to back World Champion.

Every training session here carries memories, lessons, sacrifice, and achievement.

Never underestimate your Shihan.
Never underestimate the value of hard work.
And never forget those who helped shape you into the champion you are becoming.

It is in these special moments that I feel the wairua of Kyokushin come alive and the spirit of OSU explode from within.

Shihan Penita and I will be travelling from Napier to Hamilton today, and we are excited to launch our new Assistant Instructor Programme with invited students this afternoon.

A reminder that tonight's training has been combined for all students and will be held at 6:00pm at Pembroke Street (Metro Judo Club) location.

Hygiene and presentation are a critical part of karate training. Please ensure you arrive with a clean dogi, deodorant, drink bottle, towel, and your sparring gear packed and ready for every training.

Before class, take some time to practise your Dōjō Kun. It is important that every karate-ka not only recites these principles but also understands the meaning behind the teachings and how they apply both inside and outside the dōjō.

We look forward to seeing everyone tonight.

🌱 For those who don't know, Shihan Penita has a passion for growing her own herbs, lemons, and organic vegetables.

As we move through life, we have come to appreciate that health and wellbeing extends beyond the dōjō floor. Good nutrition, physical activity, and connection to the whenua all play an important role in healing, resilience, and living well.

At DK we believe in developing the whole person body, mind, and spirit.

🥋 Train with Purpose.
🌱 Live with Balance.
