On 1 May, changes to the Retirement Villages Act took effect in Victoria. This is the biggest change to Retirement Village law since the Act was introduced in 1986, and follows a long campaign by HAAG and allied groups like Residents of Retirement Villages Victoria.
The changes affect many aspects of retirement village living, including fees and charges, resident committees, breach processes, and a new dispute resolution service called VicAssist. Standardised contracts will become mandatory later this year.
The Residential Tenancies commissioner will be touring Victoria to explain changes to the act. If you would like her to visit your village please express interest at tinyurl.com/register-roadshow. And of course, if you have an issue please call our Tenancy and Retirement team on (03) 9654 7389, option 2.

During Homelessness Week we will be screening two documentaries featuring the voices of people affected by redevelopments, closures of housing and the broader housing crisis.

Bay Views for All tells the story of residents of the Barak Beacon housing estate joining forces to fight for a future in safe, secure and affordable Public Housing.

The Ranch puts the focus on the Hidden Homelessness Crisis on the Mornington Peninsula - a picturesque region with only one crisis accommodation centre, which was threatened with imminent closure.

Hope to see you at the State Library on the 7th of August please RSVP at oldertenants.org.au/screening

Elder abuse is not a hot topic of conversation. That's why we need days like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to raise the issue and help people recognise when older people are being abused. And we need more movies like Calle Malaga which puts elder abuse on the big screen, in a fun and hot way! A delightful movie in cinemas now https://www.flicks.com.au/movie/calle-malaga/

Find where to watch Calle Málaga in Australian cinemas + release dates, reviews and trailers. Maria Angeles is a 74-year-old woman who belongs to the Spanish community of Tangier and enjoys the quietness of her life in the colourful Moroccan coastal town .

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. An issue that desperately needs more awareness. We'd like to specifically raise the importance of secure and stable housing as a critical pathway out of abuse. The rising costs and limited availability of affordable housing alternatives leaves many older people with no other option but to continue living with those causing them harm, trapping them in cycles of abuse. There is therefore a need for increased investment in more public and community housing to ensure that older people have access to affordable and secure housing alternatives.

Bottom line: we need to retain dedicated older persons public housing. In Flemington. Across Melbourne. Throughout Australia. It's a no-brainer. HAAG supports the Governments bill to limit the Capital Gains Tax and Negative Gearing tax breaks for investors, which have distorted the housing market making housing unaffordable. The money raised needs to be directly invested in public and community housing to rectify this imbalance.
