Key Word Sign Australia

What a way to celebrate Key Word Sign Awareness Day!

Over the past week, we've loved seeing Key Word Sign happening across our community.

Different people. Different places. Different activities.

One shared goal: making communication more accessible.

A huge thank you to everyone who posted, commented, shared, signed, taught someone a sign or started a conversation about Key Word Sign.

And a special thank you to our incredible network of KWSA Presenters who take Key Word Sign into communities across Australia throughout the year.

Awareness Day might be over for another year but accessible communication happens every day. ❤️

HAPPY KEY WORD SIGN AWARENESS DAY! 🙌

Today we celebrate Key Word Sign, but most importantly, we celebrate communication.

We celebrate people who communicate in many different ways.

We celebrate families, friends, teachers, support workers, therapists and communities who learn to communicate differently so that everyone can participate.

We celebrate signs, gestures, facial expressions, body language, symbols, communication devices, speech and all the ways people connect with one another.

And we celebrate the communication partners who wait, notice, respond, model and make space for communication.

Today we want to see Key Word Sign where it really belongs:

In everyday life.

So show us your KWS!

Share a photo, video, story, activity, favourite sign or communication moment in the comments or tag us in your post.

Let's show just how many different people, places and communities Key Word Sign reaches.

🙌 Happy Key Word Sign Awareness Day 2026!

What does Key Word Sign look like in everyday life?

It might be signing more while playing.

Signing finished at the end of an activity.

Offering a choice using speech, sign, gesture, pictures or objects.

Pausing and giving someone time to respond.

Noticing a gesture and responding to it as meaningful communication.

Using signs alongside someone's other communication system.

Or remembering that communication is about much more than speech.

This Key Word Sign Awareness Day, we're celebrating the everyday communication partners who help make communication more accessible.

Where does Key Word Sign happen in your world?

Tell us in the comments, we'd love to hear.

Key Word Sign Awareness Day is coming! 🙌

On 10 October we’ll be celebrating Key Word Sign and the people who use it to make communication more accessible every day.

And this year, we want to see KWS where it really happens, in our communities.

At home. At school. At work. At the shops. During therapy. At play. In everyday conversations.

Over the next few days, we’ll be sharing ideas and inviting our KWS community to show us how Key Word Sign is part of your everyday life.
