The culture of silence on grassroots football sidelines allows abuse and poor behaviour to flourish.

Well done to The Football Association on their new reporting process. It's collaborative with relevant counties and streamlined, making it more likely that incidences of hate will be addressed.

SportWest have partnered with Respect to provide resources to help sports clubs build and maintain respectful club environments. These resources seek to educate, empower, and positively influence the individuals involved in clubs. This week, True Sport is highlighting 'The Committee Member' club specific resource.

As a committee member, you play a vital role in shaping and guiding the clubโ€™s culture.

For a club to become a place known for respect, safety, enjoyment, fairness, and achievement, itโ€™s essential that committees understand and apply good governance principles and practices.

Committee members are not just filling positions; they are crucial to the clubโ€™s success and longevity. Their active involvement helps ensure that the club remains a thriving, welcoming, and supportive environment for everyone involved.

In May 2024, all 18 teams in the Australian Football League stood for a minuteโ€™s silence, arm in arm, to take a united stance on preventing menโ€™s violence against women.

The statistic of 1 woman being murdered a week at the hands of a man they know is now ingrained in the way we speak about domestic violence in Australia.

In reality, itโ€™s only the tip of the iceberg. What lies beneath are injured victim-survivors and traumatised kids; Broken families and disconnected communities.

Lost friendships and issues with mental health; People living in fear, intimidation, sadness, and regret; A culture of abuse and violence.

Menโ€™s violence against other men is also a significant issue. The pressure to be a โ€œreal man,โ€ act tough and suppress emotions are the hallmarks of a masculinity that donโ€™t allow men to fully express themselves. Itโ€™s leading to higher incarceration rates, mental health issues and higher rates of su***de.
The consequences of menโ€™s violence ripple out into other parts of peopleโ€™s lives, their workplaces, schools and of course, in community sports clubs.

Sport mirrors society โ€“ so itโ€™s no surprise we see violence and abuse in our clubs: coaches yell at players; parents insult umpires; players sledge and swear; and the way teams easily break down into punch-ons and all-in brawls.

So, what responsibility do men have in reducing violence and abuse?

Our guest today is Jackson Katz, a thought leader in the global movement of men working to promote gender equality and prevent gender violence.

Jackson once wrote, โ€œwe need to redefine strength in men, not as a power over other people, but as forces for justice.โ€

30. Dancing with the Stars โ€“ Paris 2024 style

One of the great innovations of the Paris Olympics was the Parc des Champs or Champions Park at Trocadero Gardens at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

Every evening the medal winners from all the countries would come together to celebrate their victories with each other and the fans.

A perfect example is the joyous dancing between Japanese gymnast Takaaki Sugino and Great Britain rower Hannah Scott.

In 2021 the Olympics updated their motto โ€˜Faster, Higher, Strongerโ€™ to include the word โ€˜Togetherโ€™, beautifully encapsulated by this pair.

Simply Magnifique!

29. Hashimoto embodies the Olympic Spirit

Japanese Gymnast Daiki Hashimoto was all class as he hushed the crowd cheering him to allow his competitor and friend, Chinese gymnast Zhang Boheng, the appropriate silence to complete his final routine at the Bercy Arena.

Hashimoto understands that a true athlete wants to pit his best against his opponents best and that is the true spirit of competition โ€“ may the best person win.

Great to see respect in action.

28. She ainโ€™t heavy, sheโ€™s my sister

Magical scenes at the handball Quarter final match between Brazil and Angola when Angolan captain Albertina Kassoma suffered a shocking knee injury and was carried from the court by her Brazilian opponent Tamires Araujo Frossard.

The two are rivals in the Romanian handball league but when Frossard saw Kassoma unable to lift herself off the ground she scooped her up and carried her to the sidelines.

Frossard later said: โ€œWhen I saw her on the ground, I thought she wouldnโ€™t be able to get back up, because itโ€™s very rare that you fall and donโ€™t get up.โ€

โ€œThere was no way I wouldnโ€™t help her.โ€

Great to see the sisterhood of fair play and empathy in action.
