AVPN Week has officially begun, and we’re excited to be here! 💛

Our CEO and President, Nisha Dhawan, along with our Partnerships Manager, Ankita Das are joining conversations with changemakers, young people, community leaders, funders and partners from across the ecosystem, listening, learning and sharing perspectives on what it takes to create meaningful, lasting change.

On days like today, menstrual health gets attention. But EMpower grantee partner (We Need to Talk) asks what happens when awareness is where the conversation ends.

Working to advance menstrual justice and end period poverty in Turkey, they have long pushed for responses that go beyond products and hygiene kits.

In a recent piece for .magazine, Fer Özgüler reflects on how menstrual health tends to be funded through familiar frames such as hygiene, school attendance, emergency relief. But when these become the only lens, the wider picture slips away.

Menstrual justice is also about stigma, access to information, whether pain is taken seriously, and whether menstruation is recognised as a public responsibility rather than a private burden. Local organisations are gathering evidence and responding with care, but they rarely get the support to connect that work to policy, to public debate, to lasting change.

As Fer puts it: “What gets supported is the result of inequality, while the conditions that create that inequality are left more or less untouched.”

EMpower’s Deborah Leaver will be at the Women Deliver 2026 Conference in Narrm (Melbourne), Australia, joining over 6,500 advocates across sessions and conversations dedicated to protecting and advancing what has taken so long to build.
