Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Wisdom, who stands on top of the Mechanics' Institute at Ballarat, lost her arm in January 1951. This report is from the Sun News-Pictorial of January 13, 1951. The headline in The Age about the incident was the clever - In de Milo class now.

We are celebrating 200 years of the Mechanics’ Institute movement in Australia in 2027 🎉

In 1827, the first mechanics’ institute in Australia opened in Hobart, part of a wider movement that began in Britain to provide education and access to knowledge for working people. Over the decades that followed, mechanics’ institutes spread across Australia, becoming libraries, lecture halls, and community spaces at the centre of civic life. 📚

As we approach 200 years since the movement started in Australia, we’re marking the occasion with a national gathering in Melbourne. On 13 March 2027, the Bicentenary Seminar will be held at the Melbourne Athenaeum, followed on 14 March by a bus tour visiting metropolitan and regional mechanics’ institutes. We invite anyone involved in, or passionate about, mechanics’ institutes to come together to share their research, experiences, and local histories.

For updates, visit mechanicsinaus.org and sign up to our mailing list. ✉️

We’re so excited to come together to celebrate this shared national legacy!
