Arthurs Creek Mechanics' Institute Hall - On October 4, a plaque acknowledging WW2 Veterans of Arthurs Creek will be unveiled in the Commemorative Garden. Military Historian, Terry Phillips, will give a presentation on a theme of 'Learning Their Story'. They will also be launching a book 'Saluting Their Service' which shares the stories of our listed Veterans. All welcome

Rye Mechanics' Institute, 1930s and Miss Kate Poulton.

Kate Poulton c1930. Miss Poulton became well known in what was then the small township of Rye. She was seen most days around the streets, her voluminous black skirts sweeping the ground as she marched along, often-dragging ti-tree sticks that she had gathered for her fire and with her little dog following.
She lived for years in a very small cottage, not much more than a hut, near the corner of Napier and Collingwood Streets, near the school. Because of her age and her black garb, the schoolchildren built up the idea that she was a ‘witch'. Memories of Nell Arnold from "Rye - A Book of Memories" published by the Rye Historical Society.

Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Wisdom, who stands on top of the Mechanics' Institute at Ballarat, lost her arm in January 1951. This report is from the Sun News-Pictorial of January 13, 1951. The headline in The Age about the incident was the clever - In de Milo class now.
