Day 21
4 Common Misdiagnoses of Kawasaki Disease
Kawasaki Disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms overlap with several other conditions.
Here are four common misdiagnoses that families and healthcare providers should be aware of:
Scarlet Fever: The rash, fever, and red tongue associated with Kawasaki Disease can often be mistaken for Scarlet Fever, which shares similar symptoms. However, unlike Scarlet Fever, KD also affects the blood vessels and can lead to serious heart complications if not treated properly.
Strep Throat: Both Strep Throat and Kawasaki Disease can present with a fever and swollen lymph nodes. While Strep Throat is caused by bacterial infection and can be treated with antibiotics, Kawasaki Disease requires immediate treatment with IVIG to prevent heart complications.
Viral Infections: Infections like adenovirus or mononucleosis can cause fever, red eyes, and swollen lymph nodes, much like Kawasaki Disease. However, unlike viral infections, Kawasaki Disease affects the blood vessels and requires specific treatments to reduce inflammation and protect the heart.
Allergic Reactions: Kawasaki Disease can sometimes be mistaken for an allergic reaction due to the rash and swelling. However, these symptoms in KD are a result of inflammation in the blood vessels, not an allergic response, making timely diagnosis and treatment crucial.
