Join Professor James St. Andrรฉ for a fascinating look at the translators who first bridged China and the Englishโ€‘speaking world in the late 18th and 19th centuries โ€” a period when Britain and the United States were beginning to engage seriously with China.

At the centre of the lecture is a ground-breaking digital project that maps the relationships between these early translators. Using an interactive database, visualisations and a dedicated website, it uncovers the networks of people who shaped crossโ€‘cultural understanding long before globalisation.

Youโ€™ll see how modern digital methods can reveal fresh insights into history, literature, translation and even religion โ€” tracing the earliest direct translations from Chinese into English and the rise of expertise about China in the West.

Professor St. Andrรฉโ€™s visit is supported by the Macgeorge Bequest, the Asia Institute, and the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne.
