Join us for our October Luncheon as Dr Judith Buckrich takes us on a fascinating journey through the rich history of North Fitzroy.
Known for its historic buildings, interconnected community, and strong traditions of protest and unionism, North Fitzroy has a story as vibrant as the suburb itself.

Dr Buckrich’s latest book, Fitzroy North: People, Place, Protest, released in April 2026, begins with the local Aboriginal communities who lived here before European colonisation and traces the area’s history through the lives of early colonists, Gold Rush-era migrants, people displaced by war and conflict, and the young revolutionaries of the 1960s and 70s.

Come along for an engaging talk, get a taste of this fascinating new book, and discover the people and stories that have shaped one of Melbourne’s most vibrant suburbs.

We look forward to seeing you at our October Luncheon!

We were honoured to welcome Chris McKenzie and Cheng Lei to our September Luncheon for an inspiring discussion on the work of PEN International.

The speakers shared PEN’s history and its ongoing advocacy for writers imprisoned or silenced around the world, including the powerful symbolism of the “empty chair”, representing those unable to be present because of persecution or imprisonment.

The chair was dedicated to Australian citizen Dr Yang Hengjun, whose continued detention in China remains a serious concern.

Cheng Lei also shared her personal experience of imprisonment and the profound impact of enforced silence, while stories of writers such as Andrzej Poczobut and Ilhan Sami Comak demonstrated how letters, advocacy and international attention can offer hope.

The luncheon was a powerful reminder that freedom of expression cannot be taken for granted, and international solidarity can make a difference.

Thank you everyone who joined us for a fascinating lecture at our August Luncheon 🌌

We were delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Prentice, who shared his Modern Laplacian Theory (MLT), an updated model of solar system formation that builds on Laplace’s 1796 nebular hypothesis.

Dr Prentice explored how MLT predicts the physical and chemical properties of planets and satellites, with results supported by findings from NASA missions.

We look forward seeing many of you for our September Luncheon. Details coming soon.
