What happens when the architect of a genocide is allowed to reinvent himself as a president?
Last week, the Rohingya Maìyafuìnor Collaborative Network and Professor John Packer met with Canadian parliamentarians and senators to discuss Myanmar's sham election and the dangerous normalization of a military regime led by Min Aung Hlaing, the architect of the Rohingya genocide.
We also raised concerns about humanitarian funding cuts that are deepening suffering in Rohingya refugee camps across Bangladesh and Southeast Asia, and emphasized the need for investment in community-led solutions.
Finally, we urged Canada to continue supporting accountability efforts, including the new universal jurisdiction case in Indonesia led by RMCN, Myanmar Accountability Project, and Themis Indonesia, alongside parallel initiatives in Timor-Leste and the Philippines.
Genocide should never become a pathway to political legitimacy. Accountability is not only about justice for past crimes—it is about preventing future atrocities.
We are grateful to the Hon. Rob Oliphant MP, MP Garnett Genuis, MP Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, MP Sameer Zuberi, Senator Salma Ataullahjan, and Hon. Randeep Sarai MP Surrey Centre for continued commitment on the Rohingya cause, and engaging on these critical issues.
