Have you been on extended leave from work?

Refresh-ICU is a one-day course held at Concord Hospital, Sydney on 16 November. This course is aimed at CICM Fellows and Trainees who are returning from having taken over 3 months of leave.

The focus is on helping clinicians transition back to the workplace, with interactive small-group learning and a focus on mini-simulation in a low-stress, zero-stakes environment. Clinical topics will include troubleshooting pacing, difficult ventilation, and airway emergencies. Non-clinical topics will include parenting and work, lactation needs, and communication skills.

Not currently a CICM Supervisor of Training, but a clinician who regularly supervises junior medical staff? Interested in further strengthening your skills and links between Supervision, Trainee Development, and patient safety? Join us at the CICM Melbourne Office on Monday 30 November for our 1-Day Supervision Workshop for non-SoTs.

The art of supervising under pressure, building safe, capable ICU clinicians in intensive care and patient safety are often framed in terms of clinical decision-making. However, a significant proportion of risk arises from a less visible, but equally critical domain: HOW WE SUPERVISE. Decisions about when Trainees escalate care, how confidently they act, and how they process uncertainty are all shaped by the supervision they receive.

Join program Lead Dr Manisa Ghani for small group, interactive sessions incorporating realistic ICU scenarios, structured role plays and skills practice. The emphasis is on practical application, with strategies that can be implemented immediately in the clinical environment.

This is a FREE Workshop, with full catering provided.

Rural and Regional Support
Participants from rural and regional areas (MM3–MM7) may apply for support for return air travel and one night of accommodation. Participants are required to make their own travel arrangements.

Applications should include a brief letter of support outlining how participation in the workshop will benefit the applicant’s clinical role and local service.

How has renal replacement therapy (RRT) use changed over time in critically ill patients with AKI? In this multicentre study of 31,980 patients across 12 Australian ICUs, 10.9% received RRT. Although crude RRT utilisation remained stable, case-mix adjusted analyses revealed increasing use over time, particularly in patients with Stage 2 AKI. RRT was also initiated progressively earlier and at lower cumulative fluid balance, while biochemical parameters at initiation and mortality remained unchanged.
