Generation AusMalts (GAM)

Generation AusMalts (GAM) GAM is a group of passionate Australian-Maltese working to preserve the Maltese culture & heritage for generations to come through information & events. Why?

So let’s get this straight… you were born in Australia, lived here all your life, but one or both of your parents were born on these small islands in the Mediterranean called ‘Malta’ & 'Gozo'. Maybe it was your grandparents (Nanna or Nannu) who grew up there? Have you got an uncle named ‘Joe’ or an aunty named ‘Doris?’ Maybe you have olive skin or slightly darker features compared to other Aussie

s you know? Did you grow up in an environment where food means everything; eating these things called Pastizzi, and listening to your LOUD family speak a language that sounds like a mega mix of Italian and Arabic! Or the real giveaway… where even though you are a true blue Aussie, you get still get called ‘Malteser!’

If you can relate to any of these or similar, then it sounds like you fit the profile of an Aussie born of Maltese heritage. Whatever your connection, if you have Maltese/Gozitan blood flowing through your veins – you are an AusMalt! What does this mean? Simply that you are a part of the Generations of Australian Maltese or as we like to say... 'GAM' for short! Who is this? A group of Australian-Maltesers like you, who want to preserve their Maltese heritage, language & culture for generations to come and connect those of the same background together. Well, our ancestors won’t be around forever. So, it is up to us - the 1st, 2nd & 3rd generations, to continue the Maltese traditions and culture handed down to us by the older generation, so that we do not lose what they have taught us, sacrificed in the past and created for us up until today. How do we do this? Through SOCIAL interaction, connection and education with other Australian-Maltese individuals,
By embracing the rich HISTORY of our heritage,
By celebrating the CULTURE, strengthening Maltese identity in today’s youth and appreciating what it means to be from a Maltese background,
By protecting and improving the WELFARE of our young Australian-Maltese, and establishing networks within the broader Maltese community. When do we do this? Now! Interested to know more? Then drop us a line! As a Generation AusMalt, give us your feedback on what is important to you, what events you would like to see happen, or even better, if you wish to become involved with the ‘GAM Crew’. This page will be updated as more information evolves and events take place, so get involved and stay tuned for more!

ANYONE STILL YET TO DO THEIR CENSUS?

If you're one of the people who experienced issues filling this in recently, and still need to complete this, remember to write "Yes - Maltese" for question 16. Whether you speak a little Maltese or a lot, it all counts. To learn more, read some of our earlier posts regarding this.

The Census Australia will be taking place today. When filling this in, we ask that you ALL take note of QUESTION 16 which asks - Does the person speak a language other than English at home? Whether you speak Maltese fluently, or very little, we encourage you to answer: YES - MALTESE for this question.

Why is this important? Previous Census data showed that many (in particular, second generation Australian/Maltese) did not list Maltese as a second language, indicating to the government that the Maltese language was perhaps not as prevalent as others within the community. Such results led to funding cuts and the dramatic reduction of broadcast hours on the SBS Maltese radio program, which many rely on and enjoy listening to.

PLEASE NOTE:
To complete census online go to: http://abs.gov.au/census

To receive an actual form to complete, call the Australian Bureau of Statistics on 1300 135 070 ( 9am-5pm, Mon to Fri) NOW as the form takes 5-7 days to arrive.

To arrange an interpreter, call the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131450. Number is also listed on the back of the actual form if you already have this.

$180 fine will apply PER DAY, if you do not complete the form by mid September from Census Australia.

So again, we ask that you help out your fellow Malteser and when you reach Question 16, please answer "YES - MALTESE" whether you speak ONE Maltese word or MANY :)
