Outer Eastern LLEN

Outer Eastern LLEN Our vision is to improve education, training and employment outcomes for young people in the Outer East of Melbourne.

The Outer Eastern Local Learning and Employment Network (OELLEN) is a NFP incorporated association funded by the Vic government. The Outer Eastern Local Learning and Employment Network (OELLEN) is a not for profit incorporated association covering the local government areas of City of Knox, the City of Maroondah and the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The Victorian Government, through the Department of Edu

cation and Training, (DET), has funded the LLEN initiative to improve education, training and employment outcomes for young people. OELLEN is currently overseen by a Board of Directors which is representative of the region. The core objective of a LLEN is to improve participation, engagement, attainment and transition outcomes for young people 10 to 19 years old within its geographic boundaries. A LLEN also has a particular focus on those young people who are at risk of disengaging or who have already disengage from education and training and are not in meaningful employment.

Reflecting on Work Experience Week 2026.

For the second-year running, OELLEN partnered with Eastern Health & Gateway LLEN to give Year 10 students a genuine look inside one of the region's largest healthcare providers across East of Melbourne.

Real hospitals. Real rotations. Real career exposure.

Huge thanks to Eastern Health for continuing to open its doors to the Eastern suburbs next generation of healthcare workers. 👏

🎥 Go behind the scenes of our second annual Work Experience Program!

Last term, 15 students from local secondary schools spent a week discovering what it's like to work at Yarra Ranges Council. From parks and planning to customer service and community services, they explored the many career pathways available in local government.

Hear directly from the students about what they learned, what surprised them, and what they enjoyed most, alongside staff sharing why it's so important to give young people opportunities to experience the workplace and build confidence for the future.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the program such a success, and to our partners at the Outer Eastern Local Learning Employment Network for helping bring it all together.

Who knows... we might just see some of these students back at Council as future colleagues one day! 👏

New resource for parents!

We have developed Electrical Pathways: A Guide for Parents, a free two-page factsheet that breaks it all down, including:

✅ The core maths skills electrical work relies on (yes, including Ohm's Law)
✅ How VCE subjects like General Maths, Maths Methods and VM Numeracy connect to different pathways
✅ What employers are really looking for
✅ Free quizzes so students can test their own readiness

Four years. Thousands of opportunities.

Over the past four years, the Outer Eastern LLEN has proudly coordinated the VDSS Transport Fund, helping remove transport barriers so students can access valuable vocational education opportunities for students. Across the state, the stats are impressive!

📍 19,000+ students supported
🚌 20,000+ kilometres travelled
💰 Just $13.64 per student, per week
📅 Four years of connecting students to their future

This important initiative, funded by the Victorian Department of Education, ensures more young people can participate in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and gain the skills, experience and confidence they need for life beyond school.

Together, we're making pathways more accessible, one journey at a time.

OELLEN is proud to have partnered with Yarra Ranges Council on this Work Experience program.

We worked with local high schools to promote the opportunity, then handled the admin with schools, Council and the Department of Education — so 15 young people could simply show up and see what working in local government looks like.

Thank you to Yarra Ranges Council for being such a fantastic employer and supporter of young people.

2,000+ students. 50 organisations. 4 food trucks. Over 25 schools. 47 buses. 3 local governments. And a team of just 6 making it all happen.

This event is a reminder of what's possible when a community comes together to invest in young people and their futures, and this year delivered in every way.

A huge thank you to our incredible partners and supporters:
⭐️Knox City Council
⭐️Maroondah City Council
⭐️Yarra Ranges Council
⭐️Swinburne University of Technology
⭐️The Department of Education
⭐️Workforce Australia

Your belief in this event and the young people it serves makes all the difference. We couldn't do it without you.

And to every student, educator, and organisation who showed up with energy and curiosity, THANK YOU! You are why we do this.

Can't wait for 2027? Neither can we. Date coming soon. 👀

This morning, OELLEN was proud to host our quarterly Catholic and Independent Schools meeting, a dedicated space to share information, resources, and ideas across our school communities.

We were delighted to be joined by Tom from atWork Australia , who brought valuable insights to the conversation on how he can support young people to get the supports they need to thrive. 🙌

At OELLEN, we deeply value the work we do cross-sectorally. No matter the school, no matter the student, we are committed to serving all schools and all students, every step of the way.
