Oromo Youth Association of Australia

Oromo Youth Association of Australia Oromo Youth Association of Australia is an independent non-for profit,non-religious and non-political organisation run by volunteers and based in Melbourne.

We are committed to strengthening the unity and engagement of the Oromo youth in Melbourne, as well as the youth Australia wide, whilst promoting our rich culture, history and the Oromo struggle for justice. Who are the Oromo? The Oromo are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia whose population constitutes over 40% of the country’s 100 million people. The Oromo nation shares a common language, hist

ory, and descent, is the birthplace of coffee and is known for livestock products, oil seeds, spices and mineral resources. Oromia is also home to most of Ethiopia’s renowned long distance runners, including Abebe Bikila, Mamo Wolde, Gete Wami, Darartu Tulu, Tirunesh Dibaba, Feyisa Lilesa, Almaz Ayana and countless others. The Oromo have been oppressed by consecutive Ethiopian regimes for over the last century and endured ruthless control and exploitation by successive rulers. The recent peaceful movement has seen the Oromo people in Ethiopia and the diaspora rise up against these injustices.
