Ever wonder why a qualified teacher, accountant, electrician, or civil servant from Fiji ends up working in agriculture, retail, healthcare, factory or a service station when they first move to Australia?

In this powerful interview with Finau Fonua from ABC Pacific, Rohit Roy Kumar—President of the Australian Integrated Fijian Association of Victoria (AIFAV) and Melton’s 2026 Citizen of the Year—breaks down the harsh realities facing skilled Fijian migrants. From the catch-22 of requiring "local experience" and the disruption of artificial intelligence on entry-level office roles, to the immense talent our community brings through trade skills, agriculture, and our warm, caring nature.

Australia is facing critical labor shortages, yet degrees from USP/FNU and years of overseas civil service experience are often treated as a blank slate. It’s time to look past the uniform, respect every worker, and streamline qualification recognition pathways so our closest regional neighbors can truly thrive.

Key Topics Covered in This Video:

The Catch-22 of "Australian Local Experience"

How AI and automation are impacting entry-level corporate and administrative job markets

The rich technical, agricultural, and vocational skills the Fijian diaspora brings

Overcoming credential hurdles and recognizing regional qualifications like USP and FNU

A vital message to the Australian public: Don't judge a book by its cover

The 2026 Census provides an important opportunity to understand how Australia's Pacific communities have grown and changed since 2021.

Accurate Census participation helps provide a clearer picture of the size, diversity and geographic distribution of our communities. This information contributes to planning and decision-making across Australia.

Community leaders, churches, cultural associations, sporting organisations, elders, youth leaders and other Pacific networks are encouraged to continue reaching out through their communities.

A message through a community WhatsApp group, an announcement at church, a reminder at a community gathering or sporting event, or simply a conversation between family and friends can help reach people who may otherwise be missed.
