Safe moving and handling starts with people, not equipment.

Moving and handling is rarely just about transfers, positioning routines or equipment recommendations. Behind every assessment is a person experiencing change, loss, adaptation or a new stage of life. The challenge isn't simply choosing the right equipment – it's creating care routines that are safe, practical and sustainable for everyone involved.

Many OTs are asked to assess complex care routines, advise support workers, develop safe handling plans and justify equipment recommendations. Yet many report uncertainty when determining where safe support ends and unnecessary risk begins.

Join award-winning OT and moving and handling specialist Aideen Gallagher for this six-part series, designed to help OTs confidently navigate these complex decisions.

You'll learn a practical model for understanding necessary and unnecessary moving and handling when supporting people with disabilities and apply it across weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing care tasks using safe patient handling principles.

You'll also learn how to:
✔ Assess complex care tasks
✔ Guide care staff in safe techniques
✔ Develop effective interventions and training
✔ Create clear and practical safe work procedures
✔ Balance safety, efficiency and quality of care

Leave with practical strategies you can apply immediately in your assessments, interventions, staff education and everyday practice.

✔ Practical strategies you can use immediately
✔ Real-world examples and case studies

Sometimes the most important moments in occupational therapy aren’t about doing more – they’re about slowing down.

Lily was becoming increasingly distressed as she talked with her occupational therapist about the social challenges she was having.

In that moment, her occupational therapist didn’t push forward. They paused.

They helped Lily notice what was happening in her body, to recognise early signs of overwhelm, and to create enough safety in the moment to stay engaged in the conversation.

As things settled, something shifted.

Lily was able to share her story, talk about the value she found in social connection, and feel genuinely heard.

Over time, therapy supported greater insight into her distress signals and practical ways to manage overwhelm – helping her to make more confident choices about when and how to engage with peers, within her own capacity.

Occupational therapy is about creating the conditions in which people can feel safe enough to understand themselves and take part in life in ways that work for them.

📢 Share your story: Help show what’s really happening under NDIS reforms

Across Australia, people are already feeling the impact of changes to the NDIS – from workforce shortages, to long waitlists, to reduced access to essential supports.

As part of the No OTs, No NDIS campaign, OTA has launched a new story-sharing platform to help bring these real experiences directly to decision makers.

We’re inviting occupational therapists, NDIS participants, and their families and carers to share their experiences – including the challenges they are facing under the reforms, the impact on everyday life, and the positive difference occupational therapy support has made through the NDIS.

Stories can be shared anonymously, and all submissions are moderated to ensure they are safe and respectful.

Every story helps build a clearer picture of why a strong, sustainable OT workforce is essential to the future of the NDIS.

The Government’s proposed NDIS Amendment Bill risks undermining the very supports that help people with disability participate in everyday life. Through our No OTs, No NDIS campaign, Occupational Therapy Australia is calling for an NDIS that remains participant-centred, accessible and sustainable – not one driven primarily by cost containment.

In our submission to the Bill inquiry, OTA warns the proposed changes could reduce access to essential occupational therapy supports while increasing workforce pressure, service shortages and wait times for participants.

Without occupational therapists, the NDIS cannot function.

That’s why we’ve made 13 recommendations to strengthen the Bill and help secure a fair, sustainable NDIS for future generations.

World Day for Assistive Technology 🌍

Today we recognise World Day for Assistive Technology – a global day dedicated to raising awareness of the critical importance of assistive technology and the fundamental right for all people to access the devices and supports they need to participate in everyday life.

For OTs, assistive technology is one of many important enablers that support participation, independence and meaningful occupation, alongside skilled assessment, collaboration and person-centred practice. To support best practice across all career stages and service settings, OTA’s Capability Framework for occupational therapists supporting people with assistive technology provides clear guidance on the knowledge, skills and attitudes that underpin this essential area of practice.

The framework supports reflection, strengthens capability, and helps clearly articulate the role and scope of OT in assistive technology across health, disability and community settings.
