⭐️ FREE WEST PAPUA ⭐️

Today, December 1st 2025, commemorates the 64th anniversary of West Papua’s 1961 Independence Day, when the Morning Star flag was first raised across West Papua and the New Guinea Council declared independence from the Netherlands.

In 1962, West Papua was invaded by Indonesia. Since 1962 hundreds of thousands of West Papuans have been murdered by Indonesian forces. Some for acts as simple as raising the Morning Star flag.

This genocide and ecocide is at the hands of Indonesia and the international powers that enabled and continue to legitimise and profit from the occupation - including 'Australia'.

Despite decades of violence, censorship, and military repression, West Papuans continue to resist with extraordinary courage. Their ongoing struggle is one of the most urgent and least acknowledged human rights crises in our region.

December 1st is not only a day of remembrance, it is a day of solidarity. We honour the lives lost, stand with West Papuan communities fighting for self-determination, and reaffirm our commitment to a world where Indigenous sovereignty is respected, not erased.

Join us for an inspiring evening of film, conversation, and community at Merlynston Town Hall as Friends of Aileu screens the powerful documentary Anote’s Ark.

This moving film follows the story of Kiribati’s struggle against rising sea levels — interweaving the international advocacy of former President Anote Tong with the personal journey of Sermary Tiare, a young mother confronting the reality of displacement. It’s an intimate and urgent portrait of the human faces of the climate crisis and the cultural loss threatening entire nations.

🗓 Date: 28 August 2025, 6-9pm
📍 Venue: Merlynston Progress Hall, 1 Novian Street, Coburg North
🎬 Film: Anote’s Ark
🍿🍷 Snacks and wine available for purchase

All proceeds will go towards supporting a young East-Timorese Australian to attend the PERMATIL PermaYouth Convergence in Timor-Leste in October 2025.

PERMATIL is a grassroots Timorese organisation that leads community-driven projects to revive traditional knowledge, strengthen climate resilience, and promote food sovereignty. The PermaYouth Convergence brings together young leaders from around the world to share knowledge and strategies for decolonising agriculture and reclaiming control over land and food systems. This will be a fantastic opportunity for a future leader in the East-Timorese diaspora to learn traditional land practises and connect with their culture.

The evening will also include special guest speakers (to be announced) who will share their insights on climate justice, cultural resilience, and grassroots solutions to global challenges.
