Australian Spinal Research Foundation

Australian Spinal Research Foundation Our vision is a clear understanding of vertebral subluxation.

The Australian Spinal Research Foundation (ASRF) is more than just a research foundation – it is a cooperative of like-minded people who have a common view of health and well-being, and are willing to stand up for it. In 1977, a group of Chiropractors with a love of chiropractic and a passion to see it survive and thrive came together and set into place what is known today as the ASRF. Our role is

to remain at the cutting edge of understanding and communicating how chiropractic contributes to community health and well-being.

This is what the research has to say about chiropractic care postpartum:

Pregnancy and birth is the biggest undertaking a human body can go through, and the recovery from such a process takes substantial time. It also doesn’t always go smoothly. The immense stress that is placed on the body in order to grow and sustain a whole new life often causes injuries, strains, and issues that require time to heal during postpartum. Sometimes extra help is needed to support the body in its recovery.

A case report detailed the management of two cases of pregnancy-related symphysis p***s dysfunction. Back pain was also noted in both of these cases. Following chiropractic care, including recommended rehabilitation exercises and at home care, both cases reported improvements in their p***c symphysis pain at the 11-month follow-up. [Howell, 2012] Another case of p***c symphysis diastasis also reported an improvement in pain and movement following chiropractic care which included stabilising exercises. [Henry, 2015]

Other cases of osteitis p***s and pelvic pain postpartum reported a complete resolution of pelvic following chiropractic care. [Fano, 2013; Gregory, 2011]

A case of urinary incontinence following a traumatic birth detailed the successful management with chiropractic care and corrective exercises performed at home. Following six sessions of chiropractic care, the patient, who was in the second trimester of pregnancy, reported complete resolution of urinary incontinence. [Davis, 2018]

A focus on pelvic floor muscle training in another case of urinary incontinence postpartum reported positive outcomes. The patient received guidance on specific breathing techniques incorporating the pelvic floor muscle and transversus abdominis, and postural and lifestyle recommendations. Follow-ups at 6 weeks, and 9, 12, and 18 months postpartum reported no symptoms of urinary incontinence. [Roy, 2012]

There are many cases and studies investigating breastfeeding difficulties with a focus on the infant, highlighting concerns of tongue or lip ties, digestive issues, restriction of neck movement. There are very few that focus on breastfeeding issues from the mother’s perspective. A unique case report noted the positive health outcomes in a mother struggling with supply and let-down while breastfeeding her twins. Neck and shoulder pain was also noted during examination. Following chiropractic care, the patient was more comfortable when feeding, doubled the amount of breastmilk she was producing, and had no issues with the let-down reflex. [Baum, 2020]

Other case reports have documented the improvement in headaches, migraines, sleep, and vertigo postpartum, following chiropractic care. [Leahy, 2025; Steinberg, 2024]

You can now submit your cases for the ASRF Case Report Project 2026! 🎉

Again in 2026 we are looking for submissions that explore the role of Subluxation, Quality of Life and Functional Outcome Measures Across the Lifespan, in line with our Research Agenda focus.

The ASRF Case Report Project was designed to gather front-line evidence in the form of case study information, from Chiropractors around the globe. As a result of this project, we have now published 90+ case reports (including several case-series’). We have also published two standalone literature reviews and a commentary piece.

If there is a case that comes to mind, now is the perfect time to make a submission.

A special thank you to the Asia-Pacific Chiropractic Journal for supporting the project this year and every year 💫

Learn more about this project and submit your cases here: https://bit.ly/ASRFCaseReportSubmission

‼️ DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION - 2nd August, 2026. No exceptions will be made for late submissions. Please allow plenty of time to gather your information and submit online.

🎉 The Australian Spinal Research Foundation is excited to announce that our 2026 Grants Round is now open for Expression of Interest submissions!

We want to partner with researchers to forward the chiropractic profession and continue to elevate chiropractic research. The Foundation's mission is: 'To fund & facilitate research, and educate chiropractors, communities & peak bodies on the effectiveness of chiropractic care'.

We are committed to growing the global knowledge-base on what is central to the practise of chiropractic – the vertebral subluxation – with strong research that is clinically relevant to chiropractors. We are looking to fund motivated chiropractic researchers, with research projects aligned with our topics of interest.

In 2026 we continue to refine our research agenda by calling for grant applications exploring the role of vertebral subluxation in Quality of Life (QOL) and Functional Outcome Measures (FOM) across the human lifespan.

This year, we would again like to fund at least one paediatric study, using our 'ASRF Paediatric Research Fund', and we look forward to some great submissions!

Expressions of Interest must be received on or before 5.00pm AEST, Monday 13th July, 2026.
