Amber Community We are a not-for-profit organisation contributing to the safety and wellbeing of road users. Sessions may be conducted face-to-face, online or by telephone.

Amber Community was founded in 1994 by a small group of people whose lives had been directly impacted by road trauma. These people understood the need for a specialist service where support could be offered to those who, like them, were suffering because of the injury or loss of a loved one on the roads. They joined with professionals working in the area to provide counselling and support. From this humble beginning in 1994, Amber Community has grown to offer state-wide counselling, support and education services to individuals affected by a road incident. Counselling sessions are free of charge, confidential and unlimited in number for people affected by a collision on the roads (or involving any public transport), whenever this may have occurred. You do not need a referral to access our services. Our clients include bereaved families, friends and colleagues; injured people and carers; drivers and passengers; and people who were first on scene – witnesses, citizens who offered assistance, and emergency service workers. We are not a crisis service; our office hours are between 9 am – 5 pm, Monday to Friday. If you need to speak to someone urgently, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Amber Community is committed to educating the community and raising public awareness about road trauma and how it affects people’s lives. We do this by positively influencing driver attitudes and behaviours with the aim of reducing crashes and the resulting trauma.

ROAD SAFETY AS CULTURE

Road safety is something we all share.

Whether employees drive for work, travel between sites or commute each day, workplaces can help create positive conversations about road safety and the things that influence us on the road.

Amber Community’s Road Safety as Culture sessions combine interactive discussion with the powerful perspective of someone personally impacted by road trauma.

Suitable for all staff, the session explores everyday road use, safer choices and how people can look out for themselves and one another.

Start a conversation that can make a lasting difference.

October is Motorcycle Awareness Month.

Our lived experience volunteer speaker, Roger, shares the importance of wearing the right gear.

Motorcyclists have less protection when something goes wrong, but responsibility for motorcycle safety does not sit with riders alone.

Drivers can help by looking carefully before turning or changing lanes, checking blind spots and allowing enough space.

Riders can help by remaining visible, riding for the conditions and making choices that support their own safety and the safety of others.

Looking out for one another helps make the road safer for everyone.

Today is World Mental Health Day.

A genuine check-in does not require us to have all the answers. It can begin with noticing a change, making time to listen and helping someone connect with support that feels right for them.

For people working in roles regularly exposed to serious incidents and road trauma, looking after mental health also means recognising the cumulative impact of the work.

Supportive teams create space for people to check in, look out for one another and seek help early.

If you have been impacted by a road incident, Amber Community provides free and confidential counselling across Victoria. No referral is required.

On Sunday 15 November, we will gather at Queen’s Hall, Parliament House, for our 26th Time for Remembering ceremony.

It is a time to remember those who have lost their lives on our roads, acknowledge those who have been injured, and recognise the lasting impact of road trauma on families, friends and communities.

It is also a time to come together.

12pm, Sunday 15 November
Queen’s Hall, Parliament House, Melbourne
Free to attend

The ceremony will also be livestreamed for those unable to join us in person.

October brings together National Safe Work Month, Mental Health Month and Motorcycle Awareness Month.

Each has its own focus, but they share an important message: safer workplaces, safer roads and healthier communities are built through the culture we create, the choices we make and the conversations we are prepared to have.

Throughout October, Amber Community will share messages about workplace road safety, wellbeing, motorcycle safety and preventing road trauma.

Road safety is something we all share.

This National Police Remembrance Day we pay our respects to our Victoria Police colleagues, and our policing colleagues interstate and overseas, who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
