Photo Collective

Photo Collective Photo Collective grew out of the Fox Darkroom & Gallery which operated as an exhibition and educational space in Melbourne’s inner west.

Photo collective represents photographers, advocates, educators and curators working towards the collective goal of celebrating and contributing to the changing ecology of Australian photography. Beginning as a grass-roots, community orientated organisation, Fox evolved to become an important outpost for the public to engage with photographic work. As an organisation we have a rich history of maki

ng photography accessible to the public. Our team has curated and facilitated numerous exhibitions, book launches, artist talks, award nights and specialty workshops with highly regarded Australian and international photographic artists. Photo Collective connects photographers, writers, curators and artists from all around Australia, forming long standing collaborations and opportunities as we go. We share photography based content on a daily basis, engaging over 150,000 people per year through our website platforms. Through our partnership with Momento Pro, we release multiple publications celebrating Australian photography each year. With a focus on beautiful design and meaningful content, our publications have become a record of our current times and represent a diverse range of voices within Australian photography.

Finishing the week with some unbridled joy! This divine image from Luke Alexander .alexander.visuals stole our hearts in APA 2022 and continues to do so whenever it cross our paths again.

The softness of this moment and the care Luke must have taken to capture such an intimate moment in the wild, radiates through the image. When we look at this image, it feels like there is so much hope and beauty in the world.

Flashing back to this incredible 2023 APA Finalist image from Eryca Green of Alice Edgeley .

The connection between the photographer and the sitter seems to break through the wall of the lens, as we the viewer see an honesty and intimacy that we strive to find in portraits. Two women in a conversation through photography.

At first I am drawn to the human looking at me in the picture, however it is the scene that keeps me here further, moving around the image, finding more clues as to who this person is, and who the photographer is in turn. Just stunning.

We welcome Dr Ayooluwatomiwa “Ibukun” Oloruntoba to the APA 2026 Committee!

Ibukun is an emerging African-Australian analogue photographer and curator based in Melbourne. Alongside his creative practice, he is a medical doctor and researcher, holding a PhD in artificial intelligence in dermatology.

His photography is grounded in collaboration and community storytelling, with a focus on African-Australian communities and the spaces they create for care and belonging.

In 2025, he presented his solo exhibition ‘We Outside’ at the Immigration Museum , documenting young African-Australian event spaces, the organisations behind them, and the work required to sustain them.

In 2026, he co-curated ‘Through Our Eyes’ at Blak Dot Gallery , a group exhibition bringing together African-Australian photographers to explore love within their communities, while centering stories told from within rather than from outside the community.

We can’t wait to hear Ibukun’s thoughts on the work that comes through the awards this year. Entries close June 15th.

We welcome Lisa Sorgini .sorgini to the APA 2026 Committee!

An Australian–Italian artist, Lisa’s photographic practice inhabits the intimate, often unseen spaces where caregiving, motherhood, memory, and domestic life intersect. Rooted in lived experience and informed by feminist and sociological inquiry, her work resists sentimental or reductive depictions of women and maternal labour, instead revealing these roles as sites of complexity, resilience, and cultural significance.

In 2025, Lisa’s project The Bushfire, the Flood was exhibited at Rencontres d’Arles as part of On Country: Photography from Australia, alongside the release of her second monograph, In-Passing (Libraryman). Her debut monograph, Behind Glass, was published in 2022, followed by her first major solo exhibition at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Australia, in 2023.

Having participated in APA, as well as being featured in Stories and Photo Collective Magazine, we are so excited to have Lisa on this side of the program this year and can’t wait to hear her views on the work submitted.

To have your work considered and witnessed by Lisa and the rest of the incredible panel this year, enter before June 15th.

Australian Photography Awards (APA) is open for entries!
Image credit Renae Saxby - APA 2024 Finalist.

This incredible image of Renae’s is such a wonderful example of how photography can stun us, surprise us and tell us stories. What the image means for the artist and how it is read by the viewer is such an incredible dialogue. Renae’s unique interpretation of the scene shows us, the viewer, such a different view of the world. For me, I feel I am floating through space with this magnificent white gum, lost in the universe.

Follow through to Renae’s account to find out more about her incredible work.

We can’t wait to see what stories people are going to show us this year. Entries open now!

Our incredible partners Nikon Australia have been working on a collaboration with James Morris for his current project Ragtrader. Ragtrader is part documentary, part photo exhibition which you can get tickets to through the link in our bio 👆

RAGTRADER is a centred on the search for Cherade, a fashion label founded by his grandfather and active from the 1970s to 1990s.

Shot entirely on the Nikon ZR, the documentary traces a fragmented archive of sketches, garments, and an unfinished manuscript. Using this process to build a portrait of Melbourne’s rag trade through conversations with collectors, makers, and historians.

The photographic component emerges as a personal culmination, reconstructing and restaging Cherade garments within a 1970s Australian fashion magazine format. In doing so, Morris creates the campaigns he was never able to shoot alongside his grandfather, while contributing to the archive of a largely undocumented immigrant designer.

James is a Melbourne-based photographer and cinematographer working across fashion and portraiture. His practice focuses on colour, form, and the recontextualisation of subjects through an editorial lens, often drawing on historical references to inform contemporary image-making.

We can’t wait to celebrate both the moving image and still photography side to this wonderful project in Moonee Ponds, Melbounre on Tuesday 5th May. Stay tuned also for James’ episode next week on where he really gets stuck into the motivation behind the project.

We hope to see you there!
