Any Kind Of Danger

Any Kind Of Danger Veterinarian Rowan Blogg, talks about our relationships with animals. Be prepared to change your mind minute by minute Dr Blogg’s book should do the same.

We plea for compassion toward ALL animals, but are we wise enough to help them in ANY KIND OF DANGER? Rowan Blogg is an Australian veterinarian of the highest distinction and I greatly admire his professionalism, which I observed for years at close range. In Any Kind of Danger he has extended his work into the environment and moral philosophy by tackling the complex issue of how we exploit animals

. In the 19th Century William Wilberforce and other pioneers argued that our treatment of animals is a measure of our humanity. Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation (1975) stimulated international interest in the subject. Rowan Blogg examines the role of wildlife on the planet, millions of years before our species became dominant, but how much habitat do we reserve for their natural life? How many species are under threat? The world’s population will stabilise at about nine billion in 2050 – and this raises the fundamental issues of how much land, water and energy we will devote to raising animals for food. Is grazing an efficient or humane way of feeding our species?Industrial farming – out of sight and out of mind – involves inescapable cruelty. Chickens are raised on an A4 size of smaller ‘scratching area’, confined in multi-layered cages. Do animals have a right of access to sunlight and paddock for at least the great part of their lives? How does a cow giving birth cope with a crowded cattle truck? Do we turn our eyes away from the inevitable suffering involved in animal transport, especially life sheep exports? There are profound moral lessons to be learned from observing how we treat animals – and yet the issue will not be on the agenda for the next Federal or State elections. We are in Dr Blogg’s debt for this thoughtful, passionate book.

Greyhounds are naturally gentle and affectionate dogs. For many of us, they are beloved family members. But an ABC/7.30 investigation has revealed that in the racing industry, these gentle dogs are being drugged with co***ne, caffeine — even Vi**ra. Those who don’t cut it on the racetrack may be shot or bludgeoned to death. It's a nightmare that has continued only because punters have been shielded from the truth. But now that you know, you have the power to help stop the cruelty.

Can you believe that it's a common egg industry practice to mutilate the beaks of laying hens? Shocking but true. Hens kept in factory farmed conditions can suffer from severe stress which can lead to cannibalism. The obvious solution to this problem would be to give these sensitive birds more space — but instead, factory farmed hens often have the tips of their beaks cut off. Birds' beaks are filled with nerves, and cutting off the tip is like slicing off your fingertips. It hurts — A LOT.

But here's something to chirp about: a bill has just been presented by Shane Rattenbury in the ACT Assembly that will not only prohibit debeaking, but also battery cages and pig crates throughout the ACT. This is a major precedent — and a major blow to factory farming. And the best news? This bill is set for debate in October — and is expected to pass!

This is an update today from Ani Samten who runs the Puppy Project with Dr Michael in Southern India. She and her junior monk students have been caring for the puppies that were too sick and small for Dr Michael to operate on during his last trip in August........

"Just want to say thanks so much, again. We just finished lunch on day 1. I will rest. The team will work.

Dr. Mark is very nice. As life would have it his partner/wife is from Portland, OR and he just moved there to be with her. That's 2 hours north of where I am from :)

The 2 assistants seem very good. Much more involved than I expected. The extra help seems very beneficial.

8 little monks brought 6 not-so-little-anymore pups to the school this morning. There are 2 more at the 'palace', but I don't think they are old enough...and come to find out 2 senior monks have been keeping 2 more in their rooms. Dorjee gave them permission. I knew nothing. It is sweet to see these big guys with these very young pups. Dorjee says they are being exercised and bathed (and fed of course)...and I think this kind of thing happens often here. At one time a monk had a rabbit :)

The same 8 little monks sat for 2 hours this morning waiting and then watching. I was impressed. Curious to see the older/senior monks get squeemish, but then they better understand the surgery!

Can't thank you enough."
