Health services across the North Metro & Mitchell Local Health Service Network attended the Nursing & Health Expo, connecting with students and early-career clinicians about graduate opportunities.

The Expo highlighted new shared graduate rotations planned for 2027, designed to give graduates experience across different health services and care settings while supporting more connected career pathways across the Network.

These new rotations across Mercy Hospital for Women, Northern Health, Austin Health and Seymour Health focus on general, aged care and midwifery-based rotations.

Great to see strong interest from future nurses and midwives exploring opportunities that offer breadth of experience and career development.

Small environmental initiatives can make a big difference!

Our hospitals have introduced dedicated multi-stream recycling stations to enable the responsible disposal of hard-to-recycle items and have since diverted:
▪ more than 500 kilograms of batteries,
▪ 170 kilograms of coffee pods,
▪ 132,000 blister packs and
▪ 20 kilograms of vial lids from landfill.

At Mercy Health, 20 of our 30 residential aged care homes are now powered by rooftop solar! These systems are generating clean and renewable energy, cutting carbon emissions and reducing reliance on the electricity grid, making our aged care communities more resilient, sustainable and future-ready.

As National Volunteer Week came to a close on Sunday, we’re reflecting on the people who bring compassion, connection and companionship to our services every day.

After losing her husband David, Beverley McFarland returned to Mercy Place Lynbrook as a volunteer — staying close to the place and people who had become like family.

Now, Bev spends her Thursday afternoons chatting with residents, playing games and keeping people company.
“It gives me comfort and peace,” she says. “Helping other people has helped me too in my grief.”

We are proud to share that Kirsten Mitchener has been named the recipient of the Noala Flynn AM Award for Excellence in Palliative Care Nursing at the Palliative Care Victoria Summit.

This prestigious statewide award recognises those who go above and beyond to make a meaningful difference for patients and families. Kirsten is the first team member from Mercy Palliative Care to receive this honour, reflecting her exceptional clinical expertise, compassionate care, and commitment to mentoring others.

Her impact also extends to research and quality improvement, including leading our partnership with Ambulance Victoria.

Reflecting on her work, Kirsten shared:

“Working with people who are facing a very short life span makes you question what you are doing in your life and whether it is right… People only die once, and it’s our job to make sure they do it well.”

We are incredibly proud of Kirsten and this well-deserved recognition.
