WHO WE ARE:

Act on Climate is a team of citizens who are concerned about climate change and want to take action on it at a grassroots level. We are a diverse bunch from all walks of life; from the inner city to rural areas, young and old, and from many professions, who see th

e impacts of climate change in our lives already in different ways. We aim to secure policies that prevent climate change from getting worse and also that protect the community from climate impacts. Act on Climate will build and demonstrate strong public support for climate change action that can’t be ignored. Empowered Communities | Positive Solutions | Climate Justice

☆New Workshop☆

We're excited to bring you a new creative workshop!

Artist and collective member Harriet guided our first creative art walk with students at the Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre (CNLC) last week.

Paying attention to place and noticing adaptive capacities is part of the journey!

Our Act on Climate Collective is excited to be offering these walks more regularly. Reach out if you're interested.

A huge thank you to the CNLC and their students and teachers for their trust and enthusiasm.

A key question coming out of this summer's fires is: who should pay for the damage?

Climate change is making fire seasons longer and more intense. We believe that ratepayers shouldn't be expected to pay for the damage caused by coal, gas, and oil companies. A federal disaster levy on fossil fuel companies would force them to contribute to the problems they are causing.

Friends of the Earth Melbourne has created a survey to test community support for such a levy instead of the current Emergency Services Levy, which in its current form is an unfair burden on rural and especially farming communities.

We would really appreciate getting your thoughts on who should pay for the rising costs of wild fire. Fill out the short survey at the link in the comments.

And please share it with friends and family who were impacted to help us understand community sentiment towards who should pay for the economic costs of more frequent bushfires.

Submissions to Parliament close on Monday 13th!

As primary drivers of the climate crisis, fossil fuels companies are facing growing public pressure over paying relatively little tax and the complete lack of accountability for their impacts.

If you don't believe fossil fuel companies are paying their share of the impacts of climate change and unnatural disasters, and the burden is unfairly falling on Australians, the time to show your support for making polluters pay is now!

We currently have the chance to make higher taxes on gas productions and exports happen.

Submissions to parliament are open until April 13th!

The Energy Justice Collective have written a quick and easy submission guide, including ideas for where the tax could be spent, such as a Climate Adaptation and Insurance Fund and First Nations Resource Rent.

The Victorian parliament has extended the deadline to submit your thoughts on its investigation into the 2026 summer bushfires to 19 April.

We believe this inquiry offers an opportunity for really important issues to be considered by parliament. The Terms of Reference are broad and cover many issues relevant to the immediate fire response and recovery, and also broader issues like climate change, land management, and building community resilience.

We encourage you to send a submission to the Inquiry.

We have prepared a template submission that you could send which is available here (you can modify the content to reflect your lived experiences, views and interests). Link in comments!

If you prefer to write your own submission you can email it to the Committee at this address: [email protected]

As part of our work towards building climate resilience in Victoria, Act on Climate Vic is committed to telling the stories of people impacted by climate events across the continent. We recognise art as a powerful way to engage audiences in the reality of climate change and ignite fulfilling conversations.

Floodland Film's story of Lismore is an example of so-called Australia's need for adaptation initiatives. A key moment in the film is when now Lismore City Councillor, Harper Dalton, explains that the residents are tired of being resilient and actually want to be safe.

We know that strong climate adaptation, led by communities, can provide this safety. That’s why we are campaigning for the Victorian Government to create a Victorian Community Climate Adaptation Fund (VCCAF). The fund will be for communities to initiate adaptation projects of their own, informed by local knowledge and in preparation for local climate impacts.

See the comments for how you can show your support for the fund!

Thank you Degrowth Network Australia (DNA) for a festival full of conviviality and good conversations! And thank you to those who came for a chat and added their ideas to our vision mesh. Also to our mascot for the day, cute 'lil Clooney.

Follow DNA trip learn more about degrowth and look out for us and our solidarity spinning wheel at other events.

Reducing the amount of energy we produce and consume in an equitable way is vital, as is preparing for climate impacts. And the two compliment each other.

Both require people connecting and working together locally to create better conditions for all people and the entire ecosystem. And as we prepare we need to reduce energy use to reduce the severity of future climate impacts.

The Vic Gov's investigation into the 2026 bushfires is an important opportunity to integrate learnings and influence future preparedness.

Friends of the Earth Melbourne has prepared a draft submission that supporters could send (you can modify the content to reflect your lived experiences and views).

You can find more details on the Inquiry, including its broad terms of reference here:

Bushfires burnt across Victoria on Friday 9 January, burning over 400,000 hectares. The Victorian parliament will hold an investigation into the 2026 bushfires, run by the Upper House Environment and Planning Committee.

FoE has prepared a draft submission that supporters could send (you can modify the content to reflect your lived experiences and views).

Friends of the Earth believes this Inquiry – although instigated by the conservatives in order to hurt the government – also offers an opportunity for really important issues to be considered by parliament.

We appreciate the broad scope of the Inquiry and think it presents an important opportunity to integrate learnings and influence future preparedness. However, we echo Murrindindi Shire Council’s request for a deadline extension for directly affected areas. People remain focused on meeting their immediate needs and rebuilding their lives. Respect for recovering communities’ lived experience – and their essential contribution to an Inquiry of this nature – may mean granting additional time to contribute to this process after the recovery period.
